VIDEO: Rose (at 16) Gets Honored As Her Town’s Athlete Of The Month

I'll be honest, I wasn't a fan of Rose leading into the title fight. My only impression of her was when the camera panned to her in an audience with Holly Holm, and she had this "try hard" stone faced expression.

After learning more about her, both in terms of her fighting career and as a person, she actually seems extremely genuine, humble and dedicated. While there is a part of me that still things the "Thug" persona is a bit of an act, you can tell how much the sport means to her, and her post fight comments/behavior definitely made me a huge fan.

Unfortunately, Sherdog is full of 2 groups that struggle mightily with girl issues- jocks and nerds. No wonder they have so much venom toward female fighters, so much stronger than they have for any male fighter who would do or say the same thing. These boys seriously need to see a therapist.

That is a very cool video, and Rose is very cool. Her personality has grown on me (not to mention her skills).
 
ha pretty awesome how talented she is at piano, too. kind of bizarre this news organization would do a little story on just her -- sucks for the other gals on the team.

When she was little she was smaller and lankier then anyone else she hung out with. Just a little white girl in a mostly black neighborhood. She acted tough and her friends called her "Thug" as a nickname. It stuck with her. She also developed a persona of being "tough" and mean-mugging as a tool for fighting. She'd practice it everywhere.

She still scowls but has put some of the "thug" identity aside viewing it as having caused her problems in the past after she suffered defeats. Hard to be baddest woman on the planet after suffering losses.

(Edit) And the anger that attitude fostered in her and acted as an enabler for her and others around her to be lesser people then they ought to be. (I knew I was forgetting something.)

Sometime between this video in the OP and her entrance to the UFC, she lost all self-esteem and took on an urban persona.

Unfortunate.

Apparently, at some point, she was very likeable and didn't bring shame to her family.

Sad.
