Morrell previously won the interim super middleweight title less than a year after his pro debut.

Morrell (4-0, 3 KO) made his pro debut in August of 2019 and won the interim title just under a year later with a decision over unbeaten-but-untested Lennox Allen. Then came Mike Gavronski, whom Morrell demolished in three rounds just last month. He missed weight badly for that one, but still got to keep the belt when it was switched to a non-title bout.

Ryder (29-5, 16 KO) is monumentally more dangerous than the likes of Allen and Gavronski. He should have been the WBA “super” champ after his tremendous effort against Callum Smith, only for rotten judging to intervene. When neither a rematch nor a proposed clash with Daniel Jacobsmaterialized, he stayed busy against Mike Guy, whom he beat over 10 terrible, horrible, no-good, very bad rounds.

what the deuce?
This guy won an intrem world title in only his 3rd fight? and now defending a real world title at age 23 in his 5th fight?
Only has 130-2 ammy fights too?
Yo, he must have the world's greatest agent or his promoter loves him.

Anyway, the WBA regular world title is no different in my eyes than the intercontinental or international titles. It's like you chose to defend your spot as the second best guy in the same sanctioning body for the next few years.

Wait, why was the title vacant anyway, did somebody relinquish the belt not too long ago?

Pretty crazy matchup for a 23 year old's 5th fight, but Morrell is clearly a special prospect and has gone 12 with a half-decent southpaw. Should be a very interesting matchup.

Never heard of him. And how the fck has he managed over 130 ami fights by the age of 22?
Incredible record tbf, he must be special.
In Ryder he is fighting 1 of the most improved boxers in the last 3-4 years. Hopefully it’s a good fight.

I saw David Morrell v. Gavronski. He has speed, power, great range and an impressive Amateur record obtained on the international stage. These Cuban boxers are a lot like fighters from Mexico. They may not have the impressive pro record, but they are as close to the finished product as you can get going from the amateurs to the pros. Morrell won 130 of his 132 amateur fights. He is ready right out of the box as boxing analysts often state. However, the WBA elevated him not because he is a great boxer or because he may or may not be one of the best super-middleweights in the world, they elevated him because they know time is of the essence. He is maturing physically and missed weight badly in the Gavronski fight. He was a lean and still missed weight. If the WBA is about anything, they are about business. The business of boxing says if you’re going to take a fight with this guy, now is the time. Other more experienced super-middleweight fighters may see an opportunity here. The guy has to make a drastic weight cut to make the 168 limit. Will one of the current champions say now is the time. Canelo and Plant are headed into a showdown sooner rather than later. Morrell will probably move up a class if he cannot get a fight with one of the other champions. So the WBA in their wisdom wants their sanctioned fight. We’ve seen these sanctioning bodies pull this bullshirt before. They’ll bend the rules for their guy. If Morrell takes Ryder though and I’m his team, that may be the last super-middleweight bout for him. He is a natural light-heavy and may make hay in that division. Sample size is too small. Maybe Ryder can get him to extend himself some and we can get a better picture of his future.

When he was still only 17, some people think he deserved to beat Julio Cesar La Cruz in the Cuban National Championships. Julio Cesar La Cruz has 4 golds at Worlds and an Olympic gold medal. Definite blue chip prospect. Might have the best chance of any Cuban defector since the Revolution to be a genuine star.

that's not incredible nor impressive... amateur records count junior league, and the man is cuban...

Ryan Garcia had 200 amateur fights before finishing high school...
Devin Haney reached 130 amateur fights while still 16 and turned pro so he can fight in other countries instead of waiting for US age limit..
None of these guys are even cuban...

big step up. Seems Morrell really wants to propel himself into the big fights sooner rather than later. I think he'll live up to the hype.
