I don't think Youtube pays very well because the sponsors don't specifically pay you but pay Youtube which then pays a tiny amount per view. Some people make a lot but they have millions of views per video and a ton of them.

Depends on how you monetise your channel.
If you specifically advertise a product in your video, youtube gets nothing from that deal (besides what they would get from the video being on their platform anyway)

Being a Youtuber now isn't anywhere near as lucrative or fun as it was 10 years ago. Youtube's making it very clear that in fact they don't want any more independent content creators and are trying to drive off the ones they do have. If you didn't already become a rich and famous Youtuber before 2015 there's no point in even bothering making videos these days.
