Social What is the "liberal elite" and why is academic so liberal?

The dictionary does not shape the English language. You can add any word in the dictionary if enough people use it. Kinda is not a word in the same way y’all is not a word.

kinda was spell checked not even 5 years ago

with the advent of the internet we have just added popular dialect usages to the dictionary to appease the masses

same reason why “youse” is accepted in informal writing while it was just used by poor Australians who could not speak correctly

kinda is still not a word

Denial is tough to swallow. Congrats. Just like I can believe the earth is flat.

yeah that’s called capitalism. i thought you liked that. these high-merit administrators couldn’t survive without making all this money and they deserve it. right?

you are criticizing them for participating in capitalism, which they have no choice but to do lmao
Huh?

1. They are the ones preaching capitalism bad.

2. Universities are heavily subsidized by the government, student loans are government backed which is why they charge more than anybody could pay, and endowments are untaxed, and you've seen the results when government gets too involved. Lower quality and skyrocketing cost.

3. Why on earth would you consider thousands of diversity officers "high merit?

and they have no choice but to participate in it. we have a capitalist economic organization in this country.

“they” meaning who? the private university, yeah?

they aren’t all diversity officers, but that’s kind of my point. are you only pointing this logic at liberal colleges? or would military research & development corporations also be scrutinized? how about major banks? big tech? retail corporations? are you only concerned with liberals abusing capitalism?

<Huh2>

Government subsidies are not "capitalism". You're just using the word "capitalism" to describe anything you don't like were it doesn't even apply.

What law is there against worker co-ops where these universities "have no choice" but to gouge kids? What economic system was in place when colleges were like $1500/year and you could pay for it with a summer job?

Do you think universities could charge what they do if they didn't give government backed loans to kids with no credit history who wouldn't even qualify for a $20k car loan?

Nobody anywhere called the military "capitalist".

subsidies don’t exist outside of capitalism. if the government funds it in full, or at least the vast majority, why would it be subsidized to keep the consumer’s cost low?

i’m not saying this is a good thing. also lol @ conflating inflation with effective cost. but again, they are participating in the same thing you advocate for. you’re a capitalist yeah? you have made it possible for this greed to flourish, and you’re mad these people sometimes employ professors who support socialism.

no probably not. but do you criticize right wing lobbyist banks for doing the same thing? or the republican legislators that allow for such?

the private corporations that do R&D for the military are 100% capitalist.

Yep, and now you're trying to weasel around instead of just admitting you were wrong.

You admitted "no probably not" if it were actually capitalist, then tried to pretend university costs have just kept up with inflation.

From 2010 to 2020, the average annual tuition inflation rate at a public 4-year college was 3.11%. Over that same period, tuition increased 31.4% while tuition inflation declined 95.6%.

It isn't "subsidized to keep consumer cost low', it's subsidized to keep costs high.

And lol, Wall St. Donated 5-1 for Joe Biden. Same with big pharma, tech, and all the other corrupt industries you're fantasizing that nobody is criticizing. No bid contracts and subsidies are not "free market" you're just pissed that companies and industries that are far more socialist end up complete scams.

Yes, let's pick the least capitalist systems in society to pick out why capitalism bad. Derp.

Academia is intolerant of ideas that challenge prevailing thinking. This is pretty standard throughout history. The difference these days is that academics are generally poor and so are highly concerned with job security whereas in the past, gentlemen scientists had their own means.
