Why did more cartoon inspired graphics never really take off?

There's a new Streets of Rage game coming out? Will it be on PS4?

The thread also reminds me of the particular arcade game that came out in the early 90s. Like Dragon's Lair it was was also a quick time button mash game

I'm guessing it takes up more RAM to load each frame's animation drawing and maybe uses more resources than rendering on the fly. I don't know.

Also it took until King's Quest 7 (94) for the cartoon style to be fully utilized although you still see it somewhat pixelated on the screenshot

Curse of Monkey Island fully interegrated the cartoon look without any noticable pixels

Dragons layer looked 1000x better than those.

I liked space ace better than Dragon slayer
I had completely forgotten about that one until looking up dragons layer stuff.

It was better imo as well, but it was more rare in the arcades around so I didn’t dump nearly as many coins into it

Dragons Layer and space ace are the only two I’ve ever seen in an arcade.

I’m guessing casino strip was for “adult “ arcades ??

That means you've seen twice as many as I have.

I think some of that list were Japan only releases, but still, I think it demonstrates quite well how much of a fad they were. Dragon's Lair machines obviously made a lot of quick money in 83/84, but those profits must have dropped off very quickly for so few arcade owners to invest in other machines using the same technology.

The only reason I've heard of a few of those games was because they were re-released in the 90s when cd-rom consoles brought the technology into people's homes. Again, the fad died quickly because the games were all shite.
