When I was in high school, our PE teacher had us start playing basketball, but at some point one we realized the teacher had left and was gone for a while. There were no adults in the entire gym.

So one dude gives a hard foul, then another, and another, and it kept being progressively worse until I literally tackled one guy, and from there everyone started playing tackle basketball. Everyone was having a good time, no actual fights broke out.

All the guys playing must have gotten thrown down hard at least a dozen times, on the hardwood floor with people landing on top of them. This went on for probably 45 minutes. Teacher never came back.

When the bell rang we all just walked to the locker room to get ready for our next class. Nobody got injured, nobody was limping. I don't even think I was sore the next day.

If I were to do that today I'd probably be taken away in a wheelchair. It's amazing how resilient our bodies were when we were young.
 
I'm almost 50. I wrestled from Kindergarten through college. We used to play "Barbarian Ball" which basically was basketball with no fouls, though punching and kicking were not allowed. Pretty much everything else was. Yeah, back then I could do that for 2 hrs, go to wrestling practice for 2hrs then lift weights for an hour after that and not be sore the next day. Now I'm 50, if I did any one of those things I would have a several week recovery....lol

Holy shit! I didn't realize it was that popular.

We should start a professional tackle basketball league.

It should be pretty easy to steal the audience from the NBA since their product sucks so bad now.

I think a lot of kids played basketball like that back in the 80's and 90's. I mean, even if you look at the NBA it was a lot more rough back then. I know street ball at Rucker park back then we as pretty close to what we called "Barbarian Ball" maybe not with tackling and stuff but almost no fouls were called.
 
we played "hall ball" in college....get together as many people as you can, split them in to even teams, put a ball, any ball, in the middle of the hallway, to win you have to touch the ball to the other team's wall. Everything else was allowed.
 
Post-30-years-old, If you've ever woke up wondering why your body hurt for seemingly no reason, tackle basketball however many decades ago is the reason.

So much of this post is true.

The damage is done, but when we were younger other part of the muscles near the damage is still strong and can compensate and make up for the weakness. We think we we recovered after 3 days, or a week. We didn't. Then we went on with rough activities adding on the damage, that "feels" nothing.

Boom, 35 hits. Everything else starts slowing. The damage is no longer covered/supported by healthy parts. You wake up with a broken back after sneezing.

Similar experiences in highschool, repetitive takedowns on hardwood floors and rocky ground.

Now at 37, I slipped on mud and landed in a kneeling position about 3 months ago and my knee+hip still aren't right.
 
I remember when my feeling of being invincibility came crashing down. I was 21 and playing a pick up football game with some friends in a big mud patch. Foot sank in the mud and took a block from the side that spun me around but foot was in the muck and stayed put. Loud pop and went down in a heap.
Limped off the field and called it quits, next day knee was swollen and could barely move.

Saw the doctor and they sent me to an orthopedic specialist. I thought for sure it was a bad sprain since the swelling went down the next day and was feeling a lot better. Doctor gave my knee a quick wiggle and said "yup, you tore your ACL, you have to have surgery." I still remember thinking he must have been wrong, and injuries like that happen to other people.

now I'm 43 and have hurt my shoulder sleeping and sprained my thumb putting on a coat, so things are looking up.
 
I'm not a youngster. I watched a bit of spring training baseball and the 1st base and 3rd base coaches now wear helmets w/o flaps. I might start wearing those in lieu of baseball cap, partially because they look nice and partially because I don't think the wind will blow them off like a cap. Part for helmet protection in case of bird or some unexpected projectile like a bird.
 
Tackle basketball in 6+ inches of snow is fun as hell.

Probably better for kids... but quite fun.
