Puerto Rico Declares Bankruptcy...

I think Puerto Rico needs to sort out the issues that they got themselves in to in-house to show some responsibility, but it's clear that their leaders are now trying to blame their shitty economic failings on their status as a territory, a status of their own choosing.

This means I have zero doubt that the current batch of Puerto Rican politicians will attach their deadweight of an island to the U.S like a starving parasitic lamprey on a juicy whale when the fifth plebiscite on the status of Puerto Rico comes next month.

Before this long-expected bankruptcy, keep in mind that the choice for Statehood were repeated rejected by well over half of the Puerto Rican population, in every plebiscites held on the island.

In fact, when Puerto Rico was doing alright back in the early 2000s, a good one-third of the country consistently want to cut ties with the U.S and be their own independent country!

Fast forward to gloomier era, the last time Puerto Rico had a vote on their territory/statehood status was in 2012, when only 834,191 (about 40% of total voters who came to the poll) favored statehood, while 500,000 casted ballots were intentionally left blanks, at the urging of the pro-Independence politicians. Puerto Ricans still had their Bouriqua "national pride", despite the government debts, pension liabilities, and new taxes were mounting, while the youngs bolted for the mainland by tens of thousands every year.

Now that Puerto Rico is in the toilet, I see Puerto Rican politicians taking turn to passionately expounding the virtues of being a U.S State in their speeches (all with a disctinct Socialist flair) to their retired, unemployed, and generally broke electorate in the past couple of months, with special emphasis on the money they could may be get from Texas' oil revenues, or the money they could msy be get from California's films revenue, or the money they could may be get from Florida's tourism revenue.

With this bankruptcy and 70 Billion in debts, I fully expects the Puerto Rican Independence campaign to be dead as a doornail, and all those half-a-million blank nationalistic votes from 2012 will firmly be for Statehood in June 2017.

The path that Puerto Rico take to join the American Union could have been a beautiful story. Our 51st State Candidate could have walked proudly onto that stage twenty years ago and proclaim what cultural wonders, endless potentials, and real benefits they're offering to the Union as a tourism powerhouse in the Caribbean.

Now, all they're bringing to the table is their shame.

You do realize that the vote on Puerto Rican statehood has never been binding?

Meaning the vote is basically more of a poll. 100% of the populatiom could vote for statehood or for independence and it wouldn't really matter.

And as far as the 500k "blank" ballots, that was really something of a protest against the structure of the vote and the possible choices on the ballot.

I'll remember that next time I'm driving my car to one of the 3 bars and restaurants Im part owner of in New Jersey. Thinking how I'm much more well off I am than you. Not to mention the rental homes I own.

Don't worry I'll tip you extra at the car wash. I love tipping.

I like giving big tips.

I don't even know how much money I have right now!

What i wonder, if its it even nice.

Jamaica, Domincan Republic and Cuba are large islands so i would assume they have more beaches and less people means less strained services,

PR is crowded and small, never heard of it as a good place to visit.

There are many natural and historic sites that are downright beautiful.

It's not lost yet, if you were ever to visit it isn't at all hard to have a great time.

Are you from there?

I love tipping people also. I give the verizon guy a $20 when he comes fix somethitn and he's quick.

I have never had a problem tipping people.

Anyone delivering any food to me gets $5 minimum.

I generally tip at restaurants like 30% because that really makes waiters so happy when they get big tips, those jobs suck.

How the heck did 3 million people run up a 70 billion dollar debt??? Detroits default was only 13 billion in comparison.

Insane pensions are a large part and an economy that was propped up by lax environmental protections and tax loopholes to make it attractive to businesses, and then those businesses fleeing when the incentives died. No one prepared for the aftermath, there was no oversight and the politicians that have run the commonwealth are as corrupt and as inept as you would expect. Fake economy allowed to die + no planning + drugs + no investment in modern tech or bolstering tourism + young people fleeing.

Its a shame. It literally kills me. PR is a natural gem, the history of pre and post Columbus is fascinating. The people are proud & tough yet loving and giving. It's really fucked up.

Are you from there?

My family is, all of them. My siblings and I were the first generation born in the mainland. Most of my family lives there and I've been back many times.

and people actually thought after they passed the referendum for statehood that congress would entertain the idea

Nah. Most knew it was non-binding bullshit just as all of the ones before. Hence the low turnout and "protest" blank ballot votes.

"Well off"
"New Jersey"

lmao

Yeah I only live in one of the best most well off counties in the state, it also has the highest population so we must be doing something right over here.

Hunterdon county is ranked 4 nationally and Bergen county has like a 4000 dollar difference in household income per capita and also 800k more people.

But we can sick with your narrative to help your weak ass joke

PR should just flat out not pay anything back. The terms of the loans were predatory. I don't care were the money went. When everything goes tits up, don't go around telling people it is going to get worst if you default or flat out refuse to pay. That is like trying to get a homeless to pay back his college loan. I guarantee everyone who was loaning them money had an idea of when things would quit working and how much the island had in assets.

Yes, our tax dollars went into holding those four "polls", with the fifth one coming next month at a cost of $2 Millions to U.S taxpayers, so I know what they are.

What these plebiscites DO show are the reflection of the Puerto Rican people in regards to their identity, as well as the relation they want to have with the United States, and it always follow this trajectory, without fail:

1) The better the Puerto Rican economy is doing, the less Puerto Ricans want to be an U.S State. Back in the 90s when life is good on the island, about 1/3 of the population wants to remain with the status quo as an autonomous U.S territory, plus another 1/3 who actually demands to have their own independent country outright. No American federal taxes, yay! We can do it our own way!

2) The worse the Puerto Rican economy is doing, the more Puerto Ricans wants to become a U.S State. As their national debts are mounting, the jobs are going elsewhere, and the taxes kept increasing, the number of voters favoring Statehood shot up to over 40% in 2012.

Now that their island is officially bankrupt and their economy ran to the ground by their own people, I have ZERO doubt that Puerto Rico will vote overwhelmingly for Statehood in 2017, hoping to leech more "free money from other States" like their politicians are advetising, and I hope Congress will tell them to take that rotten attitude and scram.

This Union doesn't need a 51st State with a population that just want to tag along for the ride and "contribute" their deadweight when it suits them.

You sure seem awfully concerned about what a random message board thinks about you being poor.

I just think you said something profoundly stupid like usual and I called you out on it.

Pretty much what happened.
Are you still having a hard time sleeping because of Trump winning like you admitted before?
