BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER Reboot

As soon as I saw the title I knew 75% of the cast would be black, Chinese, mixed race and gay.

Lol at the mass triggering

Just because a black, or gay is put in a movie, that doesn't mean there's an "agenda", or it's a SJW/PC move. Lol Fucking hell.

There are movies like the Ghostbusters remake that were CLEARLY all about "fighting the patriarchy" or making some sort of social stand. That was a movie that was focused more on making a statement, than making a good movie. That is NOT the same thing as simply including minorities in roles they weren't previously cast in. People bitched about the black guy and asian girl in the new Star Wars movies as being because of "SJW" and to "appease the Asian audience".

Buffy is not defined by her whiteness. Her being black, white, asian changes nothing about her character. If the Buffy story was full of German traditions, and she was from some long line of German hunters, that would be different to then change that character.
Lol Would it really have been better to make an obvious knockoff of Buffy and just have called it "Ayaka/Maria/Keisha the Vampire Slayer"? Why reboot a series and then cast a similar cast from before?
Just because the new Buffy will be black, that doesn't mean she will be solely defined by her race. If she gave a BLM speech every episode that would be one thing, but all of these recastings where a minority takes over for a white, I never see any big deal made about their race.
It's about inclusion. Giving minorities a face and time in media and entertainment beyond their ususal roles. I am amazed at how people can see this as a bad thing

I explained it in my post earlier, like I said if they auditioned actresses and the best one was black that would be fine, but they didn’t.

“Buffy The Vampire Slayer” is supposed to be a ditsy white girl from the valley, unlike all the slayers before her, that’s part of the damn humor of the character if you read the book or watch the original movie.

The original Buffy has dreams in the movie of the slayers before her in her past lives, I’m even 99% sure one was black.

The problem isn’t that there is a black vampire slayer, I fucking love blade for damn sakes.

It’s that they decided to make “Buffy” black

“Buffy’s from the valley aren’t black

How would people feel, if Dolemite was recast with a white dude? It’s not part of the damn character

I'll wait till I see a trailer or something can't properly give it a fair shake right now.

<NoneOfMy>

The market takes care of itself. Just wait for them to blame the patriarchy when it inevitably fails.

I found some wild strawberries behind my shed and they were surprisingly good, tiny, but good

No

A. No one can replace the actors for these characters and

B. Its still aged well

literally no point in doing this outside of an unimaginative cash grab
I'm leaning towards this.

Was a BIG fan of the TV series, also really liked Angel, felt rather ehh about the original movie (tbh I consider the TV series the "real" original) and never really got into the comics.

I wouldn't mind a new series in the Buffyverse tho. Still kinda bummed the Ripper spinoff never materialized.

The problem is actually the reverse I would say, you have a movement these days that actually has very little political ambition itself BUT views politics as a good way to sell often substandard product.

BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER Reboot in the Works with Showrunner Monica Owusu-Breen

Buffy the Vampire Slayer is getting the reboot treatment.

20th Century Fox Television, who produced the original Joss Whedon drama, have put a new take on the beloved Sarah Michelle Gellar drama in development. Writer Monica Breen, who worked with Whedon on ABC's Agents of SHIELD, has been hired to pen the adaptation and serve as showrunner on the reboot.

Whedon will be an exec producer on the series and has been working with Breen on the script, which features a black actress stepping into the role of Buffy made famous by Gellar.

Gail Berman, Joe Earley, Fran Kazui and Kaz Kazui (who produced Whedon's original Buffy film that inspired the TV series) will also serve as exec producers on the potential series. A network is not yet attached for the new Buffy, talks for which began last fall. Producers Fox 21 TV Studios will pitch the Buffy re-do to streaming and cable outlets later this summer in a package bound to ignite a bidding war. It's unclear if Whedon will have any additional role on the new Buffy due to his other commitments, which include HBO's recent straight-to-series order The Nevers.

Talks for a new Buffy began last fall. A decision to move forward was determined after Breen was identified as the right writer for the reboot. A script or director has not yet been determined. Casting for the central role of Buffy has also not yet been determined. The new version, sources say, will be contemporary and build on the mythology of the original. Like today's world, the new Buffy will be richly diverse, with some aspects of the series, like the flagship, seen as metaphors for issues facing society today.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer ran for seven seasons on The WB Network (which evolved to become The CW) and UPN. The series continued in comic book form after completing its run in 2003. Buffy was based on the feature film of the same name that starred Kristy Swanson and Luke Perry that was originally penned by Whedon.

The cult favorite series became a breakout and helped turn Whedon into a household name, while also launching the careers of the series' stars (including David Boreanaz and Alyson Hannigan) and writers (including Jane Espenson and Marti Noxon). Buffy ranks as one of the greatest TV series of all time.

Breen recently created and showran NBC's Midnight, Texas. She left the series after season one. Her credits include Revolution, Fringe, Brothres & Sisters, Alias, Lost and Charmed.

Oh stop. It absolutely is checking the race box. Total SJW bullshit. Buffy was a ditzy blonde "Valley Girl" Cheeleader thrown into a crazy situation and growing and maturing. That's who Buffy was and that was the sprirt of the show. Now they will change that spirit, with a tough inner city black girl. Fuck Hollywood. How about you create something original and fresh for a black actress to play, instead of a rehash, like Annie etc

Buffy is not defined by her whiteness.

She kind of was. She was a white valley girl with the whitest name imaginable. The show joked about it.

That was then, though, and times have changed. What was once considered white suburban preppy culture is more diverse these days.

How do you know that?

And FYI, Buffy got pretty tough pretty quick, she matured in the first season or two.

I agree with you 100% on the above but want to pose a different question.

Even if it is pandering to a specific audience does that matter?

cleopatra-preview-600x350.jpg

The above is a 1963, to which Hollywood took ethnic characters and replaced them out with white ones to pander to its mostly white viewing audience (nothing wrong with that)

I could probably post 25X times the examples of this happening than what we see now with a few white characters being replaced for ethnics or women as the viewing audience changes.

PROBABLY 25X.

And yet no audience group cries more about than the group we see here on sherdog crying about it. They are far worse and more teary, demanding their safe space where this is no longer done any more, than any SJW. They seem to believe pandering is ok only if they are pandered too and they get very angry, and suddenly it must end because others are now being pandered to.

There is nothing wrong with Hollywood pandering. It means they are looking out at the changing face of the audience and changing their material to reflect that and to market to that.

That was the rumor. Unless you think they will use a ditzy Cheerleader valley girl who is black, because they are so common. That's what Hollywood does...they check boxes, but they still stereotype...Whenever its an ensemble cast, and one is black, they always have to "be black" instead of just being human. God forbid its a black women...here comes the attitude and tough act.
