Conor’s Ground Game: No trolls allowed

It was my birthday today.. I got a shirt, some pants, and a piece of ass.. All three were about two sizes too big
Ohhh yeah...

My first Sherdog thread was showcasing some highlights of Conor's ground game. I kept up with most of it and just made some tweaks to this spoiler tag with all of the information. It is quite a lot, but I tried to organize it sensibly.

I edited it, in this post to update the outdated post.

Yeah, just wanted to chime in and say if you watch this fight at certain points you can see some good reason to believe he has at least decent wrestling skills. Not claiming Dave Hill tho be an elite UFC fighter but he is a ground specialist with a lot of submissions and both fighters had similar records coming in.

8:38 - 9:11

Against a fighter who has tons of submission finishes, Conor McGregor is confident enough to pull guard at 8:44 and eventually posts back to his feet with the cage and reverses.

10:09 - 11:33

Seeing some great submission defense from Conor McGregor throughout this sequence as well.

13:08 - 13:34

The rest of the first round, Conor McGregor delivers some brutal elbows to punish a weak takedown attempt from Dave Hill and does cheat a bit with the cage to dominate the position to get to Hill's back and to attempt to set up a choke in the final seconds.

I won't bother analyzing the second round, don't want this to be too long of a post especially for a first one.

Just some footage and maybe some evidence we have to attest to Conor McGregor's dealings with a ground fighter. Surely, he has spent time and is beyond these levels at least with a decent progression already one would assume. Just wanted to see if I could add this to some discussion I see has been happening.

Ive actually watched the whole Dave Hill fight. I know he was very respected in Cage Warriors (at least the announcers seemed to think a lot of him.)

How do you think he’d fare in the UFC?

From all that has been shown in previous figgts its decent. Its not elite or great, nor is his coach. His bjj may be ok, wrestling on the other hand is not good as far as we can see. He doesnt really go for takedowns except when he is panicking like vs nate in their first fight right before he gave his neck with no resistance. He could have been training for the last 2 years straight 3x a day on grappling and would still be a novice compared to Khabib. He should be working non stoo on tdd, and striking. He is an elite striker, and should always concentrate on jeeping the fight standing. Sure he should know how to get up when he does get taken down, and how to hand fight when a sub is being applied, but its a waste of time to try and become a great grappler at this stage of his career. He should stick to what he is a top guy at, not what he is not even remotely near the top in.

Eh, he was a scrappy grappler. If you have the weapons on the feet Conor has, he stood little chance. He would be a bad UFC fighter imho. However, he was a solid European regional grappler. Conor was riding a hot streak after the Duffy loss coming into the fight. It was a good test.

Honestly, you’re the kind of poster that I come to Sherdog for when I want to learn.

Straight up answers, and I can tell you try to keep bias out and actually watch a shitload of fights so know what the fuck is up.

I’m a good mma fan but relatively new (10 years) with only becoming diehard last 2-3.

Trying to catch up to the older guys on here but I got a lot to learn and catch up on.

Again, appreciate the thoughtful posts.

See I keep seeing this.

But Conor’s take down defense seems vastly underrated.

Why do so many of his fights stay on the feet?
He fights a lot of strikers and usually gets quick KOs

Diego, Siver, Nate (second fight), Eddie and Chad tried to grapple a lot.

Diego, Siver and Nate don't have very good TDs. Eddie has decent TDs but got rocked Early. Chad is a monster and it showed (still want that full camp rematch).

Diego tried for a body lock but got reversed. Siver briefly made ass hit the mat 2-3 times. Chad got him down several times. Eddie was a disappointment as usual.

So overall, good defensive work from Conor. Only bad thing is that he ends up in the clinch A LOT. But hey, pluses and minuses.

When I saw you in this thread, was hoping you’d post.

So many guys get caught up on Conor’s hype (for good or bad) they can’t talk about him rationally. Feel like you can talk about most fighters pretty objectively and fairly.

Appreciate the post.

I don't think he swept Chad. He got out of a guillotine and they scrambled up.

Clip of him sweeping Diego?
Diego was more of a reversal if recall correctly, but it was beautiful

He has shown good positioning on the feet to not get taken down, and good sweeps while down.

That said, I doubt he can do much with Khabib on top.

The good news is that we will without question find out how good Conor really is in a few weeks.

Mendes gassed from only training a few days on short notice.

He caught lighting in a bottle with Aldo

He beat the ever loving fuck out of Alvarez.

Credit all around no matter the details. Big names. Big highlights.

Just surviving 5 rounds with Khabib earns a shit ton of respect with me. If this dude, finds a way to win, or even make the fight fairly close? He is a once in a generation fighter.

Thanks man. I can been a bit of a hard ass on occasion but I try to give everyone a fair shake. I try to be harsh but fair.

It's no secret that I don't care for Conor's persona but the guy is a hell of a fighter. His ground game doesn't wow me but he is no slouch. He can hold his own against most guys for sure. Especially if he cracks them first

You’ve hit on the very reason for this thread:

Conor’s striking is undoubtedly elite.

But his ground game, although not considered elite compared to other UFC fighters, perhaps is not completely terrible either.

So how good/bad exactly is Conor on the ground?

I’ve read lots of good posts so far, but I have also read a lot of guys that still want answers to some questions.

his ground game isn't bad at all. people spam the nate gif all the time, but anyone who's actually grappled knows that conor is competent on the mat.

people just can't be realistic about him. on one side, you have the crowd who laughs at him because diaz choked him out, and on the other the people who think training with danis for 2 years makes him an ADCC champion.

the truth is this: he is a good ground fighter with clean technique. his issue in this fight is that khabib makes good ground fighters look like beginners... and if khabib puts him through the grinder (which he should), people will unfairly mock conor's ground game.

Chad Mendes is considered one of the p4p best wrestlers in mma.

To be taken down by him isn’t embarrassing.

that my point is shows conor tdd isn't great. so khabib will have an easy time doing it as well.

it simple if conor is on the ground it not good for conor.

he a striker with zero sub game.

it cause if conor on the ground is gone be bad for conor.
