Khabib was usually much more exciting to be fair. Was extremely aggressive in getting the finish and even his chain wrestling style alone was more entertaining.

And whether you're a fan or not you gotta admit every single Khabib title fight was a barn burner (the interim title fight with Al less so but was still good).

Khabib also has/had rabid fans. Same with GSP. They can forgive an overall boring fight from time to time. Both Khabib and gsp had an aura about them. They can get away with boring fights, same with Chael. They can get away with boring performances. Cory can not, he’s just not there yet.

When Cory is spinning hook kicking and flying kneeing guys heads off, Dana loves him. When he does...back to back smother fests, yeah, they hate having top ranked contenders become boring and safe. Sandhagen doesn't run his mouth like Strickland to compensate.

Very true although I think people give GSP in particular too much slack on here for some of his more boring title defenses, and it should be remembered this is basically the only boring Sandhagen fight ever so he should get some slack too.

What the hell kind of comparison is that? Khabib literally finished all three of his last title defenses and was constantly looking to either pass the guard, land hard ground strikes, or hunt for submissions. That is in no way like Cory going for takedowns and mostly laying on Rob.

Khabib's smesh was wayyyyy more violent

Khabib’s dominance was a spectacle in itself because he could do that to any man on the planet. Sandhagen couldn’t do that against Aljo. People don’t want to see fighters compromise

no way. up until khabib became champ, people complained about his boring “suffocating” style. the excitement around his fights (which only emerged once he was champ) came from (1) his fans, who were excited to cheer for him in religious solidarity, and (2) the fact that conor put him over as a star. nothing about his grappling heavy style was any more “violent” or “exciting” to anyone else’s. to be fair, his championship fights were the most exciting fights he ever had. but there were so few, it’s a stretch to assume he could “do that to any man.”

the simple fact is when cory does it, people will perceive it as boring. cory doesn’t have a nation behind him. he doesn’t have a religion behind him. he doesn’t have a brash, charismatic personality. all he has is a reputation as an exciting standup fighter, which he did not live up to tonight. had his original opponent showed up and won in similar “suffocating” fashion, there would be accolades from the usual suspects, we’d be hearing about he’s the next khabib. everyone knows it.
