What does that have to do with anything? Hundreds of people violently interrupted the certification of the election. Under what influence did they take those actions? Dozens of people were convicted of Seditious Conspiracy. Were they in contact with anyone in Trump's orbit when they formulated their plan?

I think there's an argument for it not applying to the president. I think the fear at the time was that the South would put a bunch of traitors in power. But if someone is popular enough to win the presidency, you can't really keep them off the ballot without losing legitimacy unless you have a really, really strong case.

The popularity argument would apply to every elected position. The rule is to prevent people that act against the country from gaining power. Section 3 gives a pathway through congress to allow someone to regain the right to hold office again.

I think one would have to make the argument that the President is above any law for this not to apply to the office.
