The situation is ridiculous for many reasons.

You make it sound as if the UFC skipped over Stipe (not sure if that was your intent). The reality is that Stipe has been clear that he only wants to fight Jones. And Jones has been clear that he only wants to fight Stipe. And the UFC is more than happy to oblige because they think it's a money fight. They're all complicit in this sham. Aspinall and Pavlovich were nothing more than pawns because the UFC needed a "title fight" to beef up the MSG card.

That being said, if I were Aspinall, I'd just crush of couple of these flawed HW contenders and collect easy ppv points. There's no point in crying about it; everyone knew the sham they signed up for.

Jon has 1 fight at HW, against the one with the worst ground game. Jon ain't in any position to deny matchups. But Jon was always ducking the real HWs, as always.

"Normally" the interim champ gets the next shot because they actually beat the other contender when the champion pulled out. Thus leaving them as the clear next contender as it sure as shit isn't the guy who just lost.

This didn't happen here as the UFC last second pulled Stipe/Sergei, which was the official backup, to put Aspinall in instead against Sergei. So we're still in the exact same position we were previously where Stipe hasn't "lost" his original shot.

Blame the UFC for being dumb for the short term gains of trying to justify their exorbitant MSG prices that were priced in based on it being Jon's retirement fight.

He wants to retire with a big name on his record.

Right now we all feel like Aspinall is a better opponent than old Stipe.
But if Aspinall loses a couple fights he could be remembered as just another contender who didn't go far - just like Jon's last 3 LHW opponents: Smith, Santos and Reyes.

Stipe should not be in the title picture in the first place. The first mistake was not booking Jones vs Pavlovich to begin with. The second mistake was taking Stipe off the card when he had been training and wasn't injured. If he had beaten Pavlovich it would have made him a legitimate title contender.
And the third mistake is not having Jones face the interim champ Aspinall next, which is the obvious next fight to make. Three mistakes in a row just to get Jones a fight against a 42 year old who hasnt fought in 3 years.
