This is something I had not considered until right now. It could have been planned and the fight was pre determined. If that is the case, yes certainly not a fluke. You might be onto something.


Much like GSP vs Serra, I don't think Volk took hand sanitizer boy seriously. He's been saving the IFS for the big fish. Had he done it, we likely would have witnessed the first death in the octagon. Nobody wants that.




You guys are saying the rematch proved it was a fluke and because the Volk rematch hasn't happened yet, we can't say it is a fluke. I disagree with that, but I respect your opinion. When the rematch does happen, and Volk dominates Topuria, will you then agree with me that it is an all time fluke?

nah i wont agree. ilia won round 1. he wasnt dominated. ilia was ranked #1 in the world prior to winning. serra was ranked 24th and got a shot soley due to winning the ulitmate fighter. the ulitmae fighter were unsanctioned fights not counting on your record. so technically serra was actually coming off a loss and dropped in rank prior to the unsanctioned ultimate fighter tourney win. he in no way worked his way up the ranks like ilia has. volk is getting old, you have to accept it. can he win the rematch, sure. but there is no denying fighters past 35 fall off fast. volk is approaching 37.

I’m a huge Volk fan and even I know that wasn’t a fluke. He’s past 35 and got violently KO’d in his last fight just 4 months ago with 0 training camp against a gigantic LW.

The answer was Matt Serra vs GSP without question.

I believe hand sanitizer boy has just taken that title this past weekend from Serra and is now the flukiest champ after somehow defeating volk.

What do you guys think? is this now the biggest fluke title win of all time?

Serra was 9-4 leading in to his fight with GSP. He was a good LW but came up short (no pun intended) against his highest level opponents. Losing to BJ Penn, Din Thomas and in a fight he was winning fell to a last second Fluky KO via spinning back fist to Shonie Carter. He then lost to Karo at WW before being recruited for the "Comeback" season of TUF where he won beating Pete Spratt, avenging his loss to Shonie Carter & winning a SD over Chris Lytle to earn his title shot.

Matt Serra was almost 33 and a huge underdog paying + 1400 (iirc) and GSP was a month shy of his 26th birthday and a vastly more athletic fighter.

In contrast Ilia Topuria was 14-0 and was favoured to win by most sportsbooks. He is 27 and Volk is 35 coming off a brutal KO loss only 4 months prior. If you don't like Ilia just say that instead of Trolling and trying to discredit his win calling it a fluke when it wasn't anything of the sort.

Neither were flukes, but the skill gap between Serra and GSP is much higher than the gap between Ilia and Volk.

An undefeated fighter with known KO power getting a KO doesn't seem very flukey to me. Granted, I think people are writing Volk off after that but he won the first round. It was competitive but even before the KO, Topuria fully looked like he belonged in there and was starting to take over the fight.

Serra was a journeyman that lucked into a title shot, got a fluke KO, got destroyed in the rematch and never did anything else. The two big title flukes in UFC history are Serra and Bisping. Even though Holly hasn't done much after head kick KO'ing Ronda, you can't even call that a fluke because she dominated the fight. Ronda just happened to be the right opponent for her style to shine.

Volk actually won the first round, at least on the judges' cards. I do agree with your take on the use of the word "fluke" and how it gets mistakenly tossed around in MMA circles, though.

there would be no way to determine if it was till after the second fight.

Not necessarily. I think it's totally fair to call Nunes's win over Cyborg a fluke, given that Cyborg has no other losses since her first fight in 2005, and given that the knockout came from a windmilling brawl that either one of them could have come out on top from.

Idk what fight you guys were watching??? Volk won the first round. Look at the scorecards from all three judges. All had it 10-9 VOLK. NOT ONE JUDGE GAVE IT TO TOPURIA! You guys are nuts to act like hand sanitizer boy was dominating that fight before the fluke. Classic Sherdog
