Official Women's MMA Discussion Thread #6

I think the Brazilian girl Galdeha that fights out of Nova Uniao has some serious potential.

I disagree. Germaine's problem is that while she is a fantastic technical striker, she is not a finisher. She has to maintain kickboxing distance for the full 15 minutes if she wants to win. That is very difficult to do against someone who is determined to grapple.

Holm (and Nakamoto) can finish fights in a hurry. They don't need wait around for the judges to decide. The don't need to fight off takedown attempts for the full 15 minutes. They can capitalize on any mistakes their opponent makes and land a kill shot, rather than just score points.

IMO, Holm and Nakamoto's styles are far more efficient in MMA than de Randamie's style. To them, technical excellence is just the means used to obliterate their opponents, not the end itself.

I think you are spot on with your analysis here, and I have to back you up on it :p De Randamie is just not able to generate the pressure she needs to keep her opponents at her optimum range. Hard to change up your style tho when you've used it for your entire(very successful) kickboxing career. But she's gotta do something or she won't get any higher in mma I think.

@FightIQ: Completely agree! She`s my favorite fighter right now. I don`t dislike many fighters. I love all of WMMA and a bout between any two fighters is worth the watch for me. I have a very short list of fighters I really like and cheer for - now, Miriam is at the top of that list.

@Thirdpres...and along withe the above comment, I have to ask: With all of your magic tricks for locating obscure WMMA vids, do you know where I can watch Miriam`s first MMA fight? I can`t find it. A multiple Muay Thai Champion transitions to MMA and no one has a video camera on hand to record the bout? You`re right about her bout with Murphy: if she wins that (quickly and decisively), it will be time to start mentioning Miriam among the top 10 at 135.

Ansaroff looks legit, but it`s hard to against Munah in this one, even considering the long lay off for her.

The comments I`m reading here about Germaine remind me of when Stephan Leko (sp?) had a contract dispute with K-1 and decided to follow is striker colleague Mirco Cro-cop into the world of MMA. After 3 straight - and quick - losses, Mirko told Leko, "Hey, you`re just not cut out for MMA." Maybe this is the case with Germaine. That`s kind of why I suggested Germaine vs. Kaufmann (despite their discrepancy in the rankings). They both like to stand and bang and it would give both of them an opportunity to make a statement: Kaufmman could show that she can still dominate and be counted among the best at 135 and Germaine could fight someone more like herself and be given a kind of a "win (convincingly) of your out" type of chance.

@Thirdpres, I also admire Seo Hee Ham. Pride, Bushido, Dream, Smackgirl, Jewels, etc. all follow (or followed) the same formula at one point: get marginal "foreign" fighters in to lose to skilled Japanese fighters, `cause that`s what the audience is paying to see. Seo Hee Ham was brought in for that purpose (Wow! Your pro debut is against the most feared striker in Japan`s WMMA? Good luck kid). Not only did she show she could bang, but she adapted after each of her losses to the savvy grapplers in her division. Now she can do both and looks really good (I`d love to see her come over and fight in Invicta - I`m sure she`d do well, like Inoue did).

Has anyone heard about how many events Invicta is planning on having in 2014? I heard they were going to more than their usual four (or, three as in the case of 2013). Are they really only going to let Michelle Waterson and Cyborg fight once a year? They`re two of the biggest draws and should be on more fight cards. This makes me think we`ll see another Invicta event before March. But, I`m just speculating.

Jarl.

I don't think Germaine is comparable to Leko. As far as I know, Leko never took MMA seriously and cross-trained other disciplines. He was completely out of his depth. Germaine is taking seriously and has proven she can be competitive in the sport, but unless she develops either (1) a MUCH stronger ground game or (2) a more violent approach to her striking, she's not going to be contending for any titles.

That`s kind of why I suggested Germaine vs. Kaufmann (despite their discrepancy in the rankings). I suspect Kaufmann would do the same thing to Germaine that Julia Budd did .... press her up against the cage and never allow her to get into a rhythm at kickboxing range. Kaufmann is very good in the clinch, and I think that is where she would beat de Randamie.

That fight exists from what I have been told (Edit) and now remember - My YouTube viewing history suggests about 7 months ago. I had to go look it up, it was bothering me not knowing for sure.

(Good found. I knew it was out there. I couldn't remember for sure how I knew it and now that I'm watching it I remember seeing it ... I was pretty sick at the time so no wonder I forgot about it.)

Check below.

Ansaroff looks legit, but it`s hard to against Munah in this one, even considering the long lay off for her.

Ansaroff is a good fighter but with Holland's ability to KO an opponent at any moment it is hard to go against her. It being Ansaroff has the better ground game and Holland has a hard time dealing with being taken down and controlled (in the past) it wouldn't surprise me to see Ansaroff take the fight in that direction.

Ansaroff is Amanda Nunes training partner and friend. If you see Nunes' fights or most MMA Masters (Camp) fighters you will see the both of them in the fighter's corner.

I think Germaine de Randamie can do okay in the Women's Featherweight Class as the comparative lack of strong skill sets and few strong fighters with ground games would allow De Randamie to be competitive and develop her skills while still fighting.

If Kaufman where to fight De Randamie, and felt outmatched in the stand up, I think she will just take De Randamie down. It would be a chance for Kaufman to practice doing something she usually doesn't do in her fights, work on her ground game. That could be interesting but it would likely be another solid bjj brown belt taking down a low level bjj blue belt at best. Essentially a repeat of Nunes vs. De Randamie.

Kaufman has a better clinch game then Nunes too, Kaufman's was superior to that of Alexis Davis' and Liz Carmouche's as examples.

Kaufman vs. Nunes would get you a similar shot a at having nice striking affair along with two solid brown belts. Kaufman would have an edge in technique while Nunes would have size and explosive strength on her side.

If course there is room for Kaufman vs. De Randamie to be an interesting fight. If it does not become a blowout for Kaufman and De Randamie somehow gets the win then you will have hosed Kaufman (who can stop takedowns) while allowing De Randamie (who can't stop takedowns) entry into the top 5 or 10 of the Women's Bantamweight Division.

I see the appeal of that fight (I do) but overall I don't like it.

Yeah. Seo Hee Ham did, and continues to do, fight great fights. Many people were hoping Invicta would bring in Ham to fight Michelle Waterson for the Invicta Atomweight title. I would like to see that fight.

On that same topic I wouldn't mind seeing Alyona Rassohyna, from the Ukraine, brought in to fight for Invicta either, whether it be at Atomweight or Strawweight. She hasn't really had high profile fights on the world stage yet so she is not well known but, from what I have seen of her, she can do well against most of the top 5 of both divisions.

Like most Russians and Ukrainians, however, she is a little lacking in wrestling top control and maybe too willing to go for submissions over positioning and ground and pound. She does do good ground and pound though.

Has anyone heard about how many events Invicta is planning on having in 2014? I heard they were going to more than their usual four (or, three as in the case of 2013). It looks like Invicta will be doing 8-10 shows next year but that information came out before the restructuring. Hard to say if things will change.

Cyborg is supposed to fight on the next card in January or in February. I'm not sure if Waterson will fight on that card too or be held off for the following card, although that would be a bit of a layoff.

I noticed that PXC has all of their fights from this morning's event on their facebook page:

You'll find PXC 41 - Gina Iniong (Philippines) vs. Nathalie Heidel (France) there.

Definitely recommend putting it on fullscreen. Hard to see otherwise.

Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuq! I guess I got here too late; it says I can`t watch the video of Nakamoto (blocked). But thank you for Thirdpres for tracking it down.

I would love to see a Seo Hee Ham vs. Waterson fight! 105 is kind of thin as a division (IMO) and I think Invicta would be wise to bring over more Japanese/Korean fighters to give the division a little more credibility. I think Numata would be another great addition (very underrated fighter at 105).

If Invicta is planning more events (8-10 sounds like a lot...but I think they could swing 6, one every other month), then we could expect to see an event in February. I thought it was weird to see Charmaine Tweet on the Invicta 7 card (and not Gomes)...but I guess we can speculate a Cyborg vs. Gomes match-up soon (I have no facts regarding this - just speculation). Also, the Waterson layoff is way to long. Penne wants a rematch soooooo bad and if they don`t want to give it to her, Invicta had better provide another opponent for Michelle soon.

Ben236 posted that one. If I had my head on straight I'd have remembered having seen it earlier this year and posted it. Sorry it is blocked for you though.

It was a bit of a surprise at first that Invicta was looking at 8-10 (even a mention of 11) events in 2014. There has been some speculation that they have a TV deal to account for this number of events. Only 9 fights this time around and no lower level fights, although they still have some recently turned pro fighters on their roster.

Cyborg vs. Gomes makes sense. (Edit: I recall that was in the works previously for Invicta) There has been some talk of Cyborg fighting at 155lbs, from time to time, for Invicta as well.

Knapp has been against Penne getting an immediate rematch with Waterson hence the need for a good opponent at 105 for Waterson. Seo Hee Ham or Alyona Rassohyna would be good choices.

There has been some fan interest in either Lacey Schuckman, Simona Soukupova, or Mei Yamaguchi as possible matches for Waterson outside of Penne. With Schuckman and Soukupova being out of the picture for Invicta and Yamaguchi having lost her last fight and not signed the people to fight Waterson at 105 are in short supply.

Yamaguchi had been talking about dropping down in weight to fight at 105, so she fits into this discussion. Tough, close, loss to Patricia Vidonic.

Here is some translated information on an up coming fight between Linn Wennergren (1-1-0) SE vs. Angelica Babbi (0-1-0) IT at Superior Challenge 9, Sweden. I noticed several people in different places trying to get information on both fighters and what weight the fight will be taking place at so I decided to post some of what I found here.

Gala's female match is between Linn and Angelica. (Wennergren) has been both Swedish and French champion in Thai Boxing with a record of 19-11-0 (3 KO). In addition, she has also competed actively in Kickboxing, Submission Wrestling, amateur MMA and Boxing. This makes her one of Sweden's most deserving female fighters. Multiple Thaiboxnings medalj

You could try watching it via a proxy site (hidemyass for example).

Sorry, I should have been more specific: it`s blocked where I am (due to my location, Japan, I guess). Thanks Thirdpres for posting and thanks Felis for the suggestion.

@Thirdpres, Indeed, that`s what I mean when I say 105 is pretty thin; It`s like there`s Waterson and Penne (whom Knapp doesn`t want to fight each other for a while) and then a cliff! I hardly think Lacey Schuckman should get a title shot. Soukapova is underrated, but again, probably not ready/worthy of a title shot yet. So, they really need to think about bringing some Japanese/Korean fighters over like Seo, Numata, and/or Yamaguchi (if she drops down). I think Jennifer Penne would destroy Lacey Schuckman (and Waterson has already beat her), but Penne vs. Seo and Waterson vs. Yamaguchi would be awesome bouts.

I`ve also heard about the formation of a 155 division (and some fighters clamoring for it like Tamika Brents and Rothenhausler). It would be even thinner than 145 (which is only a little better than 105), but it makes sense in the long run.

@Felis, Thanks again for the suggestion...I could watch it. She`s just so impressive, and dominating in this fight. But, I didn`t like her dropping her guard (kind of a disrespectful gesture towards her opponent). She had better not do that against Lauren Murphy or she`ll get clocked! Still, it was a pleasure to watch; she`s a great finisher!

Shit, now I guess I know why the OWMMA discussion stopped appearing in my subscriptions...

Edit:

For Invicta 7, I'm mostly excited about Honchak vs. Smith, Calderwood vs. anybody, Nakamoto vs. Murphy, and Herrig vs. Torres. (if only to see Torres light her up)

Seriously, Leslie Smith is quickly becoming one of my favorite fighters. She's got the cardio and fighting style of a Diaz, with the heart and mentality of basically anyone else.

Shayna Baszler – The Queen of Spades Ultimate Fighter 18 Weekly Q&A Episodes 9 and 10

One of women’s mixed martial arts true pioneers with an extensive fan following, “The Queen of Spades” Shayna Baszler is a member of Team Rousey on The Ultimate Fighter 18 Team Rousey vs. Team Tate. Baszler has been fighting professionally since 2003 and has amassed a record of 15-8-0 with notable wins over Julie Kedzie, Sarah D’Alelio, Alexis Davis, Roxanne Modafferi and Keiko Tamai. The victory over Tamai was groundbreaking for the sport as Baszler became the first fighter to win a fight with the daunted “Twister” submission. Training under “The Warmaster” and catch-submission specialist, Josh Barnett, Baszler was definitely one of the favorites on this season. In her fight to get into the TUF house, Baszler faced Colleen Schneider and won via an armbar submission in the first round. On Episode 2, she faced Julianna Pena and in a shocking upset was submitted in the second round. Shayna will be giving her answers to your questions weekly every Monday throughout the season!

Here are some of your questions and Shayna’s answers from TUF 18 Episode 9 and Episode 10:

1. In the episodes prior to Ep.9, Anthony fit the “annoying little kid brother,” how was he in training though? I imagine Ronda wouldn’t let his silly antics get in the way of the serious side of training.

Shayna Baszler - Yeah he rarely acted that way in training, he took training seriously and he always worked hard. Don’t get me wrong we all had our different personalities that came through at training but he was never a distraction to whereas Ronda needed to reprimand him.

Yep. We needs to see a few more high level fighters enter into Invicta FC's Atomweight Division. I get the impression that they dropped Schuckman because she took a fight against a debut MMA fighter instead of fighting Jessica Penne. I don't know the specifics of why they dropped Soukupova.

I know Soukupova wanted to be sure she was getting fights while Invicta was changing their dates around so much earlier this year, after their third event. With one more fight, assuming a win, Soukupova would have been a decent opponent to via for the title.

I thought Soukupova either won, or should have gotten a draw, in her very short notice fight against Karolina Kowalkiewicz (catchweight 122lbs).

It was a close fight.

I`ve also heard about the formation of a 155 division (and some fighters clamoring for it like Tamika Brents and Rothenhausler). It would be even thinner than 145 (which is only a little better than 105), but it makes sense in the long run.

Assuming Invicta does manage to have 8-10 shows this coming year they will be able to sneak in a few 155 fights to start getting a few of their heavier fighters fights. At the moment it is a very weak weight class but it is in better shape then 145 was five years ago.

Haha.

Pat "This ain't Tae Kwon Do!" Barry.

I always enjoy his antics.

...Yeah, I got that impression, what with him grinding hard to make weight, while his opponent quit.

A lot of guys are clowns off the mat, but get serious during training.

I'm also glad that his advances over half the TUF women got him nowhere. I was really impressed by the professionalism they exhibited. Moras (I hope she never looks at the Youtube comments of her fights) said it best when she said (paraphrasing) "None of us are here to get hooked up. We're here to work."

I've definitely been enjoying the women on this seasons' TUF. Between being goofy and working hard they have been bringing it.

I like how Moras moves between seriousness and going deadpan (humor) "I'm, like, fighting a giraffe."

This coming Wednesday, Moras vs. Pena.

Ought to be good.

Making her Invicta FC debut on December 7th, Tonya Evinger returns to the cage for the first time in over a year looking to continue her three fight win streak.

A finisher through and through, Evinger is a true veteran of the sport, and has lengthy resume in both MMA and amateur wrestling. Combat tested and stronger for it, Evinger brings her crowd pleasing style to the Invicta FC cage against fellow veteran Kelly Kobold at Invicta FC 7.

Corey Smith: How did your storied amateur wrestling career first come about? What led you to stick with the sport?

Tonya Evinger: I wrestled in Jr high, High School, college, and on the U.S. senior freestyle team. What can I say; I always liked putting my hands on people.

It's clear that Jag wants money and not competition, not that you can blame her for that.
