BJJ in a post Covid-19 world

It has been interesting seeing the situation for BJJ in the US versus where I teach in the UK. I've only just been able to reopen, as of two weeks ago, with only solo drills and grappling dummies. Contact training is possible, but very limited: you can only do that with a member of your...

BJJ in a post Covid-19 world

Yeah, it must be super tough for anybody in a mega pricey place like Manhattan. Although where I live (Bristol, UK) isn't known for cheap commercial rents (nothing compared to Manhattan or London, but not insignificant), I pay waaaay less than that, so the financial hit to me has been far more...

BJJ in a post Covid-19 world

Yeah, it's been mixed. In terms of response to solo drilling classes, I can only go off Instagram etc, but it seems like a number of schools have been able to pull it off (i.e., looks like decent attendance, but then that could just understandably be the image they're trying to present online)...

BJJ in a post Covid-19 world

In my city (Bristol, UK), most of the BJJ gyms seem to be ok, as far as I can tell. Since late July when the English regulations allowed for non-contact training, they've been open for solo drilling classes. I run a gym, which I have kept closed since March. I'd prefer to stay closed, but...

    Choque - The official thread

Forgot I had an alert for this thread: yeah, I'll believe it when I see it in terms of The Closed Guard documentary coming out, but at least Drysdale hasn't done a Hywel. It does at least look like it is progressing towards being finished. Interesting that he now has a book associated with it...

Is this the guy from Team Lloyd Irvin?

For those who don't remember the details of the TLI situation, all here.

    Dominyka Obelenyte Left MG

Wow, terrible thread even by Sherdog standards. On a more positive note, her match with Yas Wilson at Polaris 4 last weekend was excellent. I also really liked how she paid respect to Yas' toughness. Has anyone seen Dominyka's app on Digitsu? She had some nifty mount attacks at Polaris beyond...

Ongoing Team Lloyd Irvin Scandal - Part 6

If you mean mainstream in general, then yeah, but BJJ stories are never going to be mainstream. Although having said that, there were more mainstream news stories about the Team Lloyd Irvin rape scandal, such as on Deadspin and the Miami New Times. If you mean mainstream within BJJ circles...

Ongoing Team Lloyd Irvin Scandal - Part 6

It looks like TLI have gotten hold of the original LloydIrvinRapeTruth.com url and put in a redirect, as they're still trying to bury the information. Fortunately, the original content is still all over the web, as lots of people copied it to stop it getting buried. E.g., Kintanon has it up here.

The Crucifix Building Blocks (Official Thread)

They're both very good. If you're looking for something super in depth that you want to work through over several months/years, Aesopian has the detail and breadth. If you want an introduction or a refresher on the crucifix, then Jacobs is concise (none of the videos are over two and a half...

EBI 6! WOW! Look at that line up!!!

They're inviting convicted felons from TLI now? I'll stick with Polaris.

Lets See What You Guys Look Like Part II

Can't remember if I posted on this thread already or not, but I'm on the far left in this pic, after teaching class a couple of weeks ago. Apparently I'm tiny. :)

Why do many BJJ schools bother with sit ups?

I don't bother with sit-ups in my warm-ups, but not because I dislike the exercise. The problem for me is that it isn't BJJ specific enough. Much better IMO to do something that works the same muscles, but is something you would actually do in BJJ. E.g., I get people to drill sit-up/hip bump...

Your experience with hemp gis (Kauai, Datsusara)

Because it fits well (no plans to transition, but I guess I must have a womanly figure ;)) and I think the company is awesome: Fenom do a lot for women in BJJ. :)

    BJJ in Gibraltar

It's been a few years, so as I'm visiting Gib at the moment, did anything ever come of those BJJ club plans?

    Berkut Jiu-Jitsu Event (Moscow, Russia)

Possibly, but Berkut BJJ is based in Chechnya and has held BJJ events there in the past (e.g., the Berkut Jiu Jitsu Open was in Grozny, held in February). I would strongly suspect it is sponsored to some degree by the president of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov. He's well known for his love of combat...

    Documentaries

In terms of free stuff: High Quality: Rolling in Richmond Jiu Jitsu Lifestyle YouTube version: Rolling in Richmond: (1) (2) (3) Jiu Jitsu Lifestyle: (1) (2) (3). Then there are these from the Helio memorial, which are interesting too (if nowhere near as professional): Part 1 Part 2 Part 3...

New DVD on a Novel Closed Guard Approach!

Sounds interesting. Possibly a silly question, but is a lot of it predicated specifically off what Jason Scully calls the shoulder clamp over on his site (as that's my go-to in closed guard)? I can see it pops up on the sample video from Busy BJJ:

    Choque - The official thread

I don't think the Geo Omori book is available in English, but you can get an eBook, here. Somebody I know bought that, but he said you need one of those Brazilian national tax code things. I've had a flick through, but as my Portuguese is poor, lots of Google Translate action. :)
