Maia would be unstoppable without rules and time limits.

A lot of people are talking about the Pride rules. Thats ok, but I was talking about the original UFC-rules and my main point is that the longer the rounds the better for Maia. And grapplers in general. OT: Maia had that punch from Marquardt coming. He started all of his early MMA-fights with 3...

    Demian Maia's training camp?

Yes, that is his new academy and that is where he mainly trains and brings sparring parters to help him. Edvardo is his manager and head-coach and Vagner Mota is his jiu-jistu coach. Altough Maia was trained in BJJ by and got his BB from Fabio Gurgel. Also he goes to train often in NY Marcello's...

Maia would be unstoppable without rules and time limits.

Some peopple here suggested that the current UFC-rules favor Demian Maia. I guess the argumet was that Maia would get kneed/kicked while on all fours, ala 1. Sakuraba vs Wanderlei Silva. That might me true, but i think Demian would pull guard in that case. Something Saku never did. But with the...

The "secret" of Gracie's success - reproduction.

I do agree with you. Nowdays it is unique in many ways the positional hierargy being the main innovation. But reading Carlos Gracie book I got the impression that innovation was discovered -or at least inforced with rules - later, maybe 70s, 90s at latest. Most of the early (pre 50s) fight that...

The "secret" of Gracie's success - reproduction.

I am very aware of that. Many of the early "jiu-jitsu" teachers around the world where Kodokan judo guys. Some others had ther training in other JJ-styles like Tenjin Shiyo ryu ect. But it all was named and called just "Jiu-Jitsu" around the world. Even in Japan judo/jujutsu was used...

The "secret" of Gracie's success - reproduction.

Wery good point from lechien! I am under impression that there where many independet, and money making, JJ-teachers around the world in first half of 1900 but bost of them switched to judo and joined Kodokan in some point. But for sure it was in the intrest (money and mover) of Gracies not to...

The "secret" of Gracie's success - reproduction.

Yes, it was released in English, but is currently out of stock. The ganging up is a good point also. Its allways nicer to fight an individual than a gang or a clan. My main relization was how the big Gracie-family was able to resist being absorbed my Kodokan (judo) in 60s when there was talk in...

The "secret" of Gracie's success - reproduction.

I just read the Carlos Gracie book and made a little video about my thought. I quote my self: "Carlos Gracie - the creator of a fighting dynasty" by Reila Gracie of is amazing book on the history of Gracie-clan and the history of Jiu-Jitsu in Brazil. It potrates Carlos as the mentor of the...

Demaian Maia is the best WW in the world right now

I dont know if Maia is the best, but he could be the champion, and hopefully he will be. One point that I havent seen anyone mentioned here (or other Maia-threads) concerns his only KO loss. Yes, Nathan Marquard KO'ed Maia early in his MMA-career. BUT it was because Maia had a patern of doing 3...

He is also great at MMA. Just look at his record.

"Demian Maia would be easy to market" - Schaub

Brendan Schaub talks about Maia and how its shameful that UFC is not pushing him for the title shot. He says that Maia vs Thompson would be a "marketing dream" - an old school match up between the best grappler and best striker. I think he is correct. Demian would be easy to market as Royce...

    Catch Wrestling United

Hitchcock's book (The book was published 1912 he was born 1854) is pretty cool lots of submissionholds and counters. Farmers books is a classic also. I personally like a book named "Wrestling intercollegiate and Olympic" from 1939 by Henry Stone. The history section is good and in techiques...

Maia bless. Maia is the patron saint of BJJ.

Maia is white and educated, but he came from rather poor family actually. I bet he is rich now. Just like Jacare. Maia follows the principles - leverage, positional hierargy - and the ideals - non-violence and minimal damage - of Jiu-jitsu. To me Maia is the perfect embassador of "the gentle art".

Any breakdowns of Demian Maia out there?

Exactly! To me thats is Maia's "secret". He really makes the other guy to carry his weight. His BB-student Bruno Cuppari has the same gift. Its miserable..

Any breakdowns of Demian Maia out there?

Not really a breakdown but I can tell that Maia is a master is positioning and leverage. He dose not squeeze you, but he feels like a ton of bricks. He dose not hold you down down but slows you down so that he can take advantage of your escape. Lets suport and help Demian get the title by usin...

    Maia Prayer Vigil

Lets keep praying for Maia. But I asked him what else we could do to help him get the title shot and he replied: "To help me is good to use @DanaWhite and @lorenzofertitta. Hashtags are also good." Demian "Mochila" Maia for the title!

Dan Hardy suggests a new nickname for Maia

"Maia" is not his nickname. His full name is Demian Augusto Maia Baptista, but he deseves a nickname. Joe Rogan mentioned in his last podcast that fighting Maia is like drowning in to quicksand, so I was thinking "Quicksand" might work? Its not that cool in Portugese though: areia movediça...

"I would shorten the sleeves." - Demian Maia

This is not about how I train. Not even how Demian trains. Its really just about a hypothetical rule-change. I doubt that this thread is gonna effect the lengh of anyones sleeves, so everyone can relax and comment on the pros and cons that this type of change would bring.

"I would shorten the sleeves." - Demian Maia

Just to make shure: Demian did not mean shortening individual gis, but to make then shorter as a rule. I have expained my point. If one happy with the current direction of BJJ then that thats great. Calling someone or something dumb is lame discussion.

"I would shorten the sleeves." - Demian Maia

Yeah, I have done both, + MMA. As have Demian. I see that the point of shortening the gi would be to get more fokus on takedowns and top game, and eliminating some of the modern guards, whitout changeing the point system. I see BJJ as a "street-fighting syle" and grabing the clothes is...
