This is an amazing video that shows they are still discovering issues with the F-35. This case the turbo-fan that resides in the rear of the pilot used for stabilizing and lift the F-35 during virtical landing. The rear jet engine has a directional outlet that produces tons of thrust.

In this case a small bird flies near the turbofan inlet and gets sucked into the inlet. In this case it seems the fan was not damaged but raises a question? Could these F-35's be taken down by a larger bird or drone?

Yes, obviously. Bird strikes represent a significant hazard to aircraft. It’s why a bird hazard analysis is a standard part of all Air Force briefs prior to flight. We’ve had a half dozen jets in the squadron go down for maintenance over the past several weeks due to bird strikes. The cost of the aircraft can’t prevent the damage a bird can do to a jet engine.

It was taken down for inspection because they did not know the damage status. If continued operating could have risked the pilot or the fighter jet or both.

isis gonna start blaring "flock of seagulls" down loudspeaker to put the fear in us like ride of the valkyries

Seems like this issue could be solved with some mesh crom Autozone.

Remember APC parts they rose to prominence shortly after the first Fast and Furious?
Pretty sure they have an endless supply 9f the shit.

May even add 20 more horses at the crank....

It was already in the midst of landing, it wasn't brought down because of it - it was inspected just out of routine. The BBC sensationalized the hell out of that.

I get that the F35 is a very expensive program that not everybody is happy about,
but is it just me or does every minor incident/fault now and during the development stage get way the fuck overblown (or just about made up entirely like the israeli jet that was "shot down" by an ancient syrian missile, or getting its ass kicked by an F16 when the F35 was still in development in basicly a safety mode)
From what I understand when i read the actual pilots/commanders opinions of the jet it seems to be performing outstandingly

This.

Bird gets sucked into inlet. Does no damage. If active duty, plane could have continued operating. Since the option was available, they took the plane out of commission and inspected it to be extra safe. Found nothing wrong. Birds probably get sucked in fairly frequently, most of the time unbeknownst, and don't do anything more than routine maintenance amount of damage.

This isn’t completely accurate. While bird strikes aren’t uncommon, at least in our squadron, the aircraft is grounded until it receives a pretty thorough inspection by maintenance. If you hit a bird, the procedure is to land as soon as possible and the A/C is grounded. At least the Air Force doesn’t fuck around with bird strikes
