Any WRers ever study in depth or adopt some Eastern religion / thought system?

Why is Buddhism hindu heresy?

I don’t believe that it is, but the question was if I had heard it referred to as Hindu Heresy. I believe the reasoning for this is that Buddhism rejects the Hindu caste system, and Siddhartha Gautama (Gautama Buddha) was a Hindu who broke away from Hinduism and the Vedic tradition.

Buddhists also believe you can leave the constant cycle whereas Hindus believe that cycle is eternal.

Were there ever big religious wars like the Crusades in South Asia between the Hindus and the Buddhists?

Also is Hinduism just a religion made up by the Aryan invaders to suppress the conquered? From what I understand about the whole caste system is that if you are good in this life, you get reincarnated into the next highest caste next. That sounds like a good deal to stay in your caste, and not make any noise.

I’m a mutt, raised with Judaism, Catholicism and Buddhism all in my family. I chose Buddhism at a young age (preteen) and have studied it as a layman along with one collegiate elective course.

You laid out a pretty broad topic... any specific questions?

I can’t claim to know much about South Asia or Hinduism, my family are East Asian, Chinese and Mongolian specifically.

Not trying to derail the thread but i find hinduism super weird and down right bizarre.

Take for example how so many of them worship dicks.

I had a Sikh guy tell me this before but didnt believe until i looked it up:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lingam

All demigods and rishis went to Brahma, the creator of the world. He got to know what had happened and, together with everyone, reached Shiva. Everyone started pleading with him and praying: ‘Please, take your penis back, it is destroying the world!’

Shiva was appeased by all these prayers and agreed, but with one condition: ‘Only if you start worshipping my penis, will I take it back!’

actually this is quite relevant to the thread. I intended a kind of free ranging discussion of Eastern systems in general. I should have stated that more explicitly. What you have said is very interesting indeed.

That reminds me, the TS forgot about Tengriism

Yes. I just posted that wiki list so I didn't have to look all of them up myself. But if anyone cares to bring up some other specifically Eastern system, do so.

Honestly, I am kind of interested to see if anyone had some knowledge of Shintoism and cared to reflect on it perhaps in its role or assumed role in WW2

I always thought of Shintoism as just Japan's version of Taoism. And Taoism being the chinese equivalent of greek and norse mythology/religion.

I think this video is relevant:

I am an "Asianphobe" since i basically does not like anything Asian except sushi, yep i dont even like Asian women. I just think Western Philosophy and Russian Literature is far superior to anything the East have ever produced. But i did tried to like Asian philosophy and religions, i really did. Being vague and egoless is just not my cop of tea.

For example i studied Buddhism, but i find it to be a more spiritual version of stoicism.

My stance is that God probably exists but every religion is false, Buddhism was the last religion i gave a chance to prove me wrong and it failed me... lol

No reason to adhere to one. They make for some decent reading, take what you like, ignore the rest.

I live in Thailand and my wife is a pretty devoted Buddist. In general, it's even more retarded than Christianity.
The only plus is they don't really try to recruit more people.
I'm curious to know..what specifically about Buddhism do you find retarded ? Also you do know that Thailand practices mostly animism mixed with a little Buddhism right ? Buddhism doesn't believe in worshipping any beings as its doctrine states that your fate is in your hands..

Have you ever heard Buddhism referred to as a Hindu heresy?

Can you be Buddhist and believe in "the supernatural" meaning a nature/supernature dualism of some sort?

Is "peasant Buddhism" true Buddhism? Less educated classes in any thought system/religion tend to "animize" (as in animism) things resulting in some kind of syncretism.

Can you be Buddhist and be a theist?

Yes I have heard it too being from Asia..but that's just from a fundamentalist type faction that is heavy on devotion and critiques all others as false..

Original Buddhism borrows much of its meditational aspects concept of reincarnation karma etc from Hindu thought..

Buddha was a Hindu just as Jesus was a Jew..

Lol you don't seriously believe that do you ? Hahaha..this symbol of linga represents pilar of fire..

The first English translations of many of the Hindu books were done by the British when they ruled India who just did gross mistranslations of many of the books..

Buddhists also believe you can leave the constant cycle whereas Hindus believe that cycle is eternal.
Not true actually..Hindus have the concept of Moksha which is liberation from the cycle..

A little inaccurate..Taoism though the term is used in mainstream today loosely to encompass all Chinese teachings, has nothing to do with Chinese Folk Religion which is what is similar to Norse and Greek..
