Anyone here ever had molluscum contagiosum? Where did you have it, how did you treat it, and how long did it take to get rid of it?

I've picked it up sometime in the last few weeks so I'm going to try and get an appointment with a dermatoligist this week.

Feeling really down about this. Haven't been able to string together two consecutive weeks of training since march because of three different, unrelated injuries, and now I have this to deal with :icon_sad:

Get them burned off because you could be out for a long time if you wait for them to heal themselves. My buddy was told up to 7-8 months or he could have scars and get them burned off. Easy choice if you want to roll.

I feel for you. I was diagnosed with it after a shaving rash spread, but was lucky in that it was misdiagnosed and after a course of antibiotics was back on the mats.

Don't let it get you down, at least until you see the specialist.

I had this about six months ago. I got them frozen off and it took about five days for the wounds to heal and then I was back on the mat. I probably should have taken more time off as the skin was still pretty raw after freezing. I now have nine circular purple-pink scars on my right arm and three on my left.

I now only wear long-sleeved rashguards when doing no-gi, primarily to minimize risk of catching it (or worse) again but also because I don't want people to see the scars and think I have ringworm or some other skin infection.

Yep. I have it, several people in my gym have it. I talked to three doctors, neither of them recommended any special treatment, they just told me to wait it out or cut them off myself. I got it on my hands, forearms and behind my knees.

In retrospect, the only thing I wish I did differently is wearing handwraps when using boxing gloves, so not to contaminate the gloves. I don't know if it's been a factor, but it seems possible.

yehhh i had this when i was like 14, doctor froze em off but i have 27 little scars on my knee from it (just counted em to double check lol)

I'm probably moving to Norway next year, hope I don't end up at your gym, haha. :icon_lol:

But seriously, don't train with Molluscum Contagiosum. It's in the name - you'll give it to everyone you roll with as it's very contagious. Get them frozen off, take a few days off training and you're good to go.

I've never heard of this. Can someone post large, high-resolution pictures so I can see what you're all referring to?

I have no problems with leaving scars as long as it gets rid of 'em. Some of the spots are pretty tiny though, would you even be able to burn something off if it's the size of a needle pin?

Is freezing them a long process? I've got a good few around my knee now...

They take liquid nitro and press it against the bumps. Takes a few second each bump.

You can do it yourself with compound W freeze off kit. Its like $13.

I got it on my peen in college, went away after a few months.

Lol, just go to the doc and get em froze off. Wait for your shit to heal and go back to the mats and tell your instructor what you got.

Or as others have stated, buy the kit where you can freeze those bastards yourself, if your not scare that is.

No. They put a cotton bud in liquid nitrogen then press it on your skin for about ten seconds, and repeat for every wart. That's it.

The problem is that if you picked it up off your mat, someone else likely has it, and people can be pretty shitty about not acknowledging they have a skin issue. This means that unless you get all the people with it off the mat, it's likely that it'll spread pretty quickly.

Pointing it out to your coach or other students can sometimes work, but it's just as likely to be ineffective as well, as they may simply not care (not helped by docs going on about how harmless it is, just need to wait for 'immunity' etc etc.)

This stuff is actually pretty rife, and I strongly suspect that outside of the States (where it's more well known due to wrestling etc.), most people carry on training without getting it sorted.

Also... While it's only the bumps themselves that are contagious, they take a few weeks to appear, so even if someone doesn't have them right now, they may have them in a few weeks. Then there's underneath the hairline etc. etc. which are hard to get.

This shit sucks. It's worse if/when you give it to your partner, who is tolerant of your training, but not into BJJ AT ALL.

Aside from your personal burn off - you also need to get everyone in your gym on board. BEFORE you come back. Otherwise you're scarred, but haven't dealt with the problem.

Word of warning, don't search google images for this unless you want to see a lot of inflicted vaginas.

yeah man, id be questioning where i got it from. you've probably got some closet dirtbag (or even an open dirtbag) at your school just handing it out
