My opinion is that he is popular because his run to the title and his actual title run were both very exciting. He's always been a do-or-die finisher, but when he put it all together and went on his run towards the title he started to gain a little steam. But the narrative was still that he was a quitter. So when Chandler dropped him, he recovered and then finished Chandler to start the 2nd and win the title it ended that narrative. People love to see athletes rise through adversity and that is what he did there, then again and again. Against Poirier, one of the more popular fighters today, especially after beating Conor, he got hurt, dropped to his back, but once again persevered and choked Dustin out. Then fought Gaethje, had the weight miss debacle and got stripped, which only endeared him more to the fans because they felt like he was getting screwed over. Then he went out and finished Gaethje, another extremely popular fighter, in the first round. Also, he fought very frequently. He didn't win the title and take 6-8 month breaks in between each fight, he was right back in there. The combination of all these circumstances and the exciting fights against some of the most popular and exciting fighters catapulted him into Superstardom.

He's neck-and-neck with Anderson Silva for being the best MMA finisher ever, and his last 13 fights, even including the loss to Islam, is one of the best runs in UFC history.

There's a lot of times that fans ignore deserving fighters. Shouldn't question them for rewarding a guy who deserves support.

Because he's an exciting kill-or-be-killed fighter, never has a boring fight, and most importantly he had an ORGANIC rise the top, not the forced artificial push they try to do with guys like Paddy/O'malley/etc. Oliviera was thrown in the deep end from his debut and grinded his way up from losing to better guys as a young fighter, to getting better then going on a big winstreak to winning the belt. People like to see that kind of journey, not the forced UFC PR machine push where they try to tell you someone's a star for beating Kris Mouthino on PPV.

Comes from the favelas.

At one point had the thick coke bottle glasses and looked like a bookworm nerd while literally being able to murder most of the population via multiple bodily weapons.

Doesn't act like a douche to opponents.

Is all business, and his business is Just Bleed. Kill or be killed.

He’s fought and finished some of the best guys in exhilarating fashion, has a marketable look, and has the backing of the second largest national demographic with the most passionate fanbase. As someone said earlier, there aren’t too many guys who deserve all of the support that they receive, but he’s one of them.

He's exciting, has come from behind wins, is respectful, has very humble beginnings, the whole story of "do bronx." this is the shit we all want, this is the brazilian rocky story, and on top of all of that, he still seems humble, still respectful, still hungry, not braggadocios, it's hard not to root for him when he fights. there are some great youtube documentaries on him, and i am an even bigger fan. there's a time and place for the mike perry types, the Cro Cops, the wanderlei silvas. It is even more enduring when someone makes it this far, with far less than you had. perspective, nuance, history. WAR DO BRONX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Charles is one of the few who went from scrub to elite. If that’s a good analogy. Us who have watched Charles since the beginning may have been fans of his early, saw his bumps in the road, and now his rise to stardom.

he’s exciting on the ground, and can KO you. Active. Very skilled.
