PlayStation CEO nixes free cross-gen PS5 upgrades for good
Upgrading God of War, Gran Turismo 7, and others from PS4 to PS5 will cost $10.
Ars Technica said:
Sony announced last week that players will be able to upgrade any version of Horizon Forbidden West from the PlayStation 4 to the PlayStation 5 for free—but that game is the last first-party release that will include this option.

In a September 4 post on PlayStation.Blog, PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan confirmed that every new first-party, cross-generation release in the future will offer players a paid current-gen upgrade path option for $10. This list includes the next God of War, Gran Turismo 7, and any other Sony-published games slated to appear on both systems, only exempting Horizon Forbidden West.

Now it will cost you

The publisher reversed course on the Forbidden West preorder plans it announced two days earlier because it had offered no way, paid or otherwise, for players to upgrade the game’s bare-bones PS4 editions to current-gen. Instead, the convoluted pricing structure required anyone interested in owning Horizon Forbidden West on both consoles to choose from multiple high-cost deluxe editions, a move that sparked significant backlash from fans.

“It’s abundantly clear that the offerings we confirmed in our preorder kickoff missed the mark,” Ryan said in the September 4 post, acknowledging that the effects of the global pandemic had delayed Forbidden West from its original projected release. “Players who purchase Horizon Forbidden West on PlayStation 4 will be able to upgrade to the PlayStation 5 version for free."

Ryan pledged in an interview last year that all Sony cross-gen launch games would include free next-gen upgrades. At the time, the roster included Forbidden West. Even this news walked back the perception that original launch-window titles like Forbidden West and Gran Turismo would be PS5 exclusives, as was heavily implied in Sony's original PS5 reveal showcase. That showcase made clear that all game footage had been captured on the new hardware...

Meanwhile, the recently released Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut featured an overly complex set of options requiring owners of the base game to buy the director’s cut content, either for $20 on PS4 or $30 on PS5. (Players interested in just getting the new expansion on PS4 can then upgrade to PS5 for $10 later.)

Oh yeah, this thread.

Microsoft in dead last yet again. Who could’ve seen that coming?

What I feel is more concerning is their lack of updates on GP. I think they were expecting to be dead last. GP is what they are pushing and they stopped releasing numbers which from what history has shown is their go to when things aren’t looking good. They could be waiting until halo drops to update numbers that’s the only thing that makes sense.

I guess Sony removed a sizable amount of the heatsink on their newer model PS5's that they are now putting out causing them to run at a higher temp. The dudes in the video below do an analyses and complete tear-down of the day one and current models of the PS5. I'll time stamp it at the part where they notice the missing copper in the newer model,

Apparently Sony is no longer selling their consoles at a loss, but they didn't change the price. They just removed 300 grams of copper and aluminum.

Strange stuff, couple that with Halo still launching incomplete after a year of delays and things aren’t looking up.

Everyone is waiting on Steve from Gamers Nexus to do a proper analysis on this “new” PS5 model before jumping to any conclusions.

I don't know who that is, but what about this review isn't proper. Did you watch the video? It's about as in-depth as you can get when it comes to the hardware side of things.

Yeah, GN is looking to get their hands on one of the new versions. Sony already had the inferior thermal solution, and now they're cheaping out on that.

The fact that the thermal reading is only of the air coming out of the exhaust port as opposed to looking at the actual temperatures inside on the components. I mean it very well could be that those are hotter too, which obviously is not a good thing, but we don’t really know for sure yet.

As for who Steve Burke from Gamers Nexus is he’s generally one of if not the most respected hardware review guys out there. Here’s his original in-depth review of the PS5’s thermals etc at launch

Console unit sales of the Xbox vs PS5 and the Switch
thats what I figured, but that doesnt really make sense because there are no xbox's available, they are sold out in minutes of release so sales at this point=/=demand, just supply.

Oh fuck that.

Thankful the only game I've bought on PS4 that I am interested in replaying on PS5 is God of War.

Glad I went with my instincts of not buying FF7, TLoU2, or Ghosts of Tsushima for PS4.
I honestly just haven't gotten around to Ghosts. I always knew FFVII was going to be ported over to the new consoles, and there were lots of rumors regarding PC. Aside from that... the remake just doesn't look very good to me. I'll get it on a Steam sale.

No clue why anyone would want TLoU2 on any platform

Seeing as FF7R part one is the only part that will be on that generation and has a free upgrade (apart from ps plus version and no free dlc after upgrade) and because its a third party title it doesn't really apply here. Plus if Square walked it back there would be a huge uproar at the very least.

Yes, I’m sure Microsoft can only produce half of Sony’s supply.

PS5 games cost $10 more than PS4 games so it’s not like buying a game on PS4 then paying for the $10 upgrade actually costs more than just buying it on PS5 in the first place.

Also, they’re not talking about the 2018 God of War, they’re talking about the new one that will come out in 2022. There is no upgraded version of the 2018 game for PS5.

Not sure but I know I’m looking multiple times a week and following Twitter updates for releases and they literally sell out in minutes.only option is paying double from assholes who are buying them up and I’m not willing to do that and I have couple friends in my same boat

Yes it’s popular in the US. Not really anywhere else.

This doesn't really bother me personally. Upgrading the game that adds in new PS5 features (whatever those may be) isn't done by just hitting a macro and the updated PS5 version is done in a few hours and ready to be sent out. I'm sure there are people who have to work on the updates and it takes time and manpower to do so. So, the $10 is justified.

I'm curious if this will change should Xbox have some 1st party exclusive bangers.
