Next chance you get, watch Caddyshack with the knowledge that Bill Murray didn't have a single scripted line in the film. He made it all up, much of it on set. He may be the greatest improvisational talent of his generation.

Eddie owned the 80s and had some good ones in the 90s. Shrek alone in the 2000s carries him pretty far even when his actual movies were meh.

You forgot Dream Girls for Eddie. Arguably his best performance and was a lock for an Oscar. Unfortunately he made Norbit and that came out during Oscar season that year and it turned a lot of voters off.

I was always more of a fan of Eddie but at this point I'll go with Bill.
At his peak, if we are talking about mainstream status Eddie was a true superstar, there are a only a few comedians if any with that kind of mainstream influence ....Murray was a star too, but not of that caliber.
But overall Murray has had a much more balanced career with a lot great movies ( not necessarlx blockbusters) in different registers... I feel that he is even more appreciated as an actor now than ever...while Murphy ..yes he was so big that he will always be a star but is not the same anymore...

Two of the best. Hard to choose but I went with Murphy. Bowfinger is the most underrated comedy ever.

This poll isn't nearly lopsided enough.

IMDb isn't as useful for comedies, but the thread asks who has the better filmography, not who was in the funnier comedies or more entertaining movies (that would make for a much more interesting matchup). A comparison of IMDb-ratings for feature films in descending order, by rating, counting only movies where either was the lead actor or part of the main cast. Top 25 for each:

Bill was barely in Darjeeling Limited

I haven't seen a lot of Bills movies so I went with Eddie. I've seen most of his movies and a lot of them you can watch multiple times. Bill is the better actor but I just enjoy Eddie's movies more.

Island of Dogs being higher then Shrek in that Imdb ranking list hurts both my head and my soul
