Gracie Barra crediting their online videos as attendance

The "genius" and most radical success of Gracie jiu-jitsu was it's monetization.
They were extremely ruthless right from the beginning, ensuring that they could squeeze all the money they could out of it and have completely loyal customers.

You want all your favorite jiu jitsu gyms to close down? If you can you should still pay your dues.

At least that's my take.

Want doesn't really have anything to do with it.

Combat sports gyms are not going to be legally reopening soon.

Whether you pay dues or not, gyms will shut down. Tons of business will shut down.

You won't personally be able to stop that unless you are so wealthy you can buy the building that the gym uses and lease the space for free while paying the instructors not to move on to something else.

It's like throwing handfuls of ice cubes at a forest fire.

That's completely wrong. Membership payments are literally how the bills normally get paid, and most gyms (the ones that weren't stuggling beforehand) can handle a reduction in revenue and still make the necessary payments.

On top of that, gyms' expanses are generally lower. Utilities aren't being used (it's a warm time of year for most gyms, so we don't even have to worry about pipes freezing). Most gyms are paying at least reduced payroll, if any at all. Most of us are able to negotiate some kind of rent reduction or deferment. All of these reductions in costs give gym owners additional leeway for surviving with reduced cashflow. That means that having some portion of students continue to (voluntarily) keep paying can absolutely be the deciding factor for the survival of many (maybe most) gyms right now.

Fo the majority of gyms, landlord negotiations are going to be the most important factor, but revenue will be a very close second. That should be pretty obvious.

not so sure about that. In Hong Kong, BJJ gyms are free to open up again since they were doing well with virus numbers. South Korea BJJ gyms are fully reopened since they have the virus under control and to near 0 cases. New Zealand BJJ gyms are scheduled to open next week
