"If I have chance to take Judo Olympic gold medal or Freestyle?...please, Judo"- Khabib

Because heknows he has no chance in wrestling.

One male judoka has earned a ufc title shot
Judo is probably more competitive than wrestling, its in like ~150 countries.

Part of the reason Judo isn't well represented in MMA seems to be because something about the culture of Judo discourages the transition to MMA. In the PRIDE era we had more judokas competing in MMA but that's because PRIDE was willing to throw tons of money at well known Judokas to transition and they were older. If we get a judo based UFC champion it'll likely be some high level amateur competitor who transitions at a relatively young age.

That really is part of human nature, growing up in Dagestan he's undoubtedly been brutally mogged by wrestlers, and did relatively well in judo and of course sambo, resulting in him having more positive associations with the latter.
I think in the video he says he personally likes wrestling more, he's just defending Judo because Cejudo is dissing it baselessly to get under Kayla Harrison's skin because she's one of the few people who can flex on his one gold medal with her two.

What the hell kind of garbage source is this? We've had one karate based champion in the UFC and its...Whittaker? Somehow I think someone is being forgotten here

Yeah that's a pretty bad list. From what they're considering as "primary fighting style", there's another guy.

How many judoka based champs have we had in the UFC vs wrestlers?
Oh, that's right...

That chart is a bit misleading and too binary. Lots of fighters dabbled in many of the arts, it’s not like they have one primary base as many D1 wrestlers do when they transition. A guy like Conor did karate first, then boxing, then MMA, so what do you put him as? Doing karate as kids opens up the door for many fighters to pivot into different martial arts, like GSP.

And it doesn't always have to be about MMA, Judo teaches so much, is a beautiful style, is a tough sport/martial art in itself. And is very effective self defense.

They probably counted him under "wrestling"

Wrestling fan boys have a tendency to favorably sort fighters according to their bias that wrestling is the best base. So if a guy coming from a wrestling background but who learns to fight standing wins a belt they'll count that for wrestling. But if someone like GSP starts out with karate and learns to take people down they also count him. In reality GSP was more of a BJJ player than a wrestler and he himself has attributed his success to his karate base.

It's strange that Khabib is repackaged as a 'wrestler' in the US when he considers himself a Samboist and Judoka and this was the bulk of his training.

Khabib doesn't consider himself only a samboist and judoka. Wrestling is what he started with, same with his father. At heart, he's a wrestler as well as a judoka and samboist. He has all of them.

As for the video, saying you'd prefer one medal over the other doesn't mean you aren't a wrestler. This thread is largely nonsense.

No:

Judokas did better in Pride because that league was a joke that bent rules and fixed fights for Japanese fighters.

why are there currently no relavant Japanese fighters above LW anywhere in the world currently?
