Jones fight IQ is insane

Jones has never come in with a gameplan self admittedly, his fight IQ is zero.

Sounds like his fight IQ is through the roof if that is true since he figures out all of his opponents mid fight like

Figuring out dc leaning to his right, so he started tearing him up with left kicks

Figuring out machida always throwing a straight left vs a kick so he fake kicked to left straight to drop him

Figuring out Rashads propensity to hand fight and used it to set up those elbows

Figuring out the opening for the spinning elbow against gus

Etc

Looks like it's time again for The Sherdog Bones Quiz, kids!

Question: Which of these characteristics is most responsible for Jon Jones' MMA dominance?

a) Elite, natural athleticism
b) Highly honed technical skills
c) Outstanding fight IQ
d) Performance enhancing drugs
A.
Which makes D even worse

Yeah, just like Shaq or Lebron's basketball IQ. It takes a lot of intelligence and resourcefulness to dominate people who are much less physically gifted than you are.

Someone like Shogun has a much higher "fighting IQ" than Jones given his success with mediocre physical gifts.

Lmao wut

Shogun was blessed with an iron chin, devastating power in both hands and was fast as fuck. Almost none of his fights have been won by game plans vs winning via brawling with raw tenacity and punching power. I think the machida fights were the only ones where he fought "intelligently"

Just because he has a muffin top doesnt mean he isnt gifted

Haha. While i do think Jones is a smart fighter...
... people overrate fight IQ.

Jones has mega reach advantage and has the best clinch/ wrestling.

It is easy to look smart when its you who can dictate where the fight goes.

What IQ could Gus use to overcome Jones' reach and clinch/takedowns when they get close?

In their first fight he was able to take Jones down and hang in the clinch with him. This fight we saw no wrestling from him at all. No offensive weapons except his boxing. Instead he stood in Jones' range and let his legs get kicked.

On paper he doesn't have massive physical advantages over Gus. He's an inch shorter and has a slightly longer reach. If Gus had better fight IQ it would be a much closer fight.

I was more astonished by Gus's absolute LACK of fight IQ.

You would think that he would have replayed the first fight out his head thousands of times, thinking what he could have done differently and what adjustments to make.

Nope - he looked absolutely clueless in there - totally one-dimensional.

Jones is incredible though - not just in terms of fight IQ but also his handling of pressure before and during fights.

Careful you might get a yellow for fighter bashing I said Gus fought like a goof and went out like a c*w**d

And got one

What could have Gus done within his skillset and his natural ability? You tell us.

Gus has been relying on his natural ability, dude has no defense, he just relies on having an iron chin and fast hands. He even rushes in leading with rear uppercuts and doesnt pull his hands in all the way during combinations so that he can punch faster and overwhelm his opponent

He doesnt adjust strategy between fights at all, just circles around between rushing in with combinations.

Jones fought with no strategy the first time and it was damn close to even. Fought with strategy the second fight and absolutely BTFO him. Hard to ignore the difference that strategy played and pretend it was only physical gift vs physical gift in both fights

He knew about DCs defense prior to the fight. He said so himself.

But again what allows him to do this is his reach advantage that allows him to keep DC far away and his wrestling that makes it hard for DC to get close. Make Jones weaker and shorter ... this great gameplan doesnt work.

He caught Machida after taking machida down and rocking him with a hellblow. Before being rocked ... Machida was winning the standup.

Ahhhh the Rashad fight ... where we learned that Jones standing Elbows can reach yku from boxing distance.

Great IQ? Maybe.
Physical advantages of range combined with his strength and strength/clinch/wrestling allowing for these feats above? For sure.

F) Reach?1?

Who came up with “fight iq”? That term is a cliche at this point. He is a smart fighter though.

Ummm no sweetie, they landed the same amount of strikes in r1 and in r2 jones landed a big overhand before the takedown. Machida was never winning the striking except for like 1 punch that caught jones off balance right before Jones avoided all the follow up punches

given how many top fighters have lost while juiced to the gills...

If you want to praise someone's fight IQ you shouldn't point to game plans. Game plans are made up by the team beforehand. Fight IQ is about making decisions on the fly.

On the fly:

Rashad grabbing his out stretched arms... Jones starts to purposely do it to turn them into elbows

The on spot Arm Crank no one thought of doing when in this position
GlitteringAdoredCicada-size_restricted.gif

Bader attempting to control Jones leg to stop the takedown, leaps backwards over him to take his back

Instantly turns holding Bonnar leg into a spinning Elbow no one had ever seen to that point

can go on and on....

Its not only physcial vs physcial but it is mostly physical.

There are grey areas ... its not 100% black or white.

Jones is stronger than Gus naturally or unnaturally
Jones has more reach than Jones.

That means Gus loses at kicking range and loses at clinching range.

His only hope is boxing range which Jones avoided this time.

So unless Gus learned new skills like how to throw even better kicks or got even better wrestling than Jones ... there is no fight IQ for him to use to make up for Jones physical gifts and his skills if Jones fights smart like he did.

If not ... tell us what you would have done with Gus' skillset and physical gifts.

There is no way for Gus to force the fight to stay at boxing range no matter what gameplan you can think of given his skillset.

Who came up with “fight iq”? That term is a cliche at this point. He is a smart fighter though.

People use "____ Iq" for every sport to describe their perceived intelligence, adaptability and decision making during competition without putting them in the same category as scientists or whatever

Like Mayweather is one of the smartest fighters we've ever seen in terms of figuring out his opponent and avoiding all damage, but he also cant read a book. What term would you use to describe that

He has a great team, I don´t know if he himself is that great at it.

Because who at JacksonWink's is executing the Jackson-Wink gameplan as good as Jones right now?
