Master & Commander (2003) Is a masterpiece only to dads.

There are a good chunk of Gen X types that need fictional movie and actors to fill the void of masculinity in their insecure lives. So I do get this.

Like those guys who buy whiskey, steak and cigars and immediately post it to Instagram.

This makes @PhitePhan feel like a man.
Whiskey and steak yum. Not into guns or cigars though.

It was good movie I went to see at the movies. I am not a go to the movies person but went to this. I had read a few of the books so knew the background. Great set design and story to show the hardships of the sea. If you have sailed or have ever been out far from land In a bad storm you would appreciate it the hardships of the times.

Also a few years after it came out I hung out with a guy who worked on film sets. The company he worked for specialized on historical stuff he had worked on this movie and had just finished up on one of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies.

Yeah Yeah, I'm here to pop the bubble on another film that Gen X considers an unsung masterpiece. Master and Commander.

Much like my thread on Casino (1995), this film is something that you only see called touchstone of cinema in retrospect. No one, absolutely no one was praising this film that much when it came out. Is it because the movie is bad? No. The movie is fine, I'd even go to say it's pretty good. It was a very watchable home cinema type film, decent performances and some cool set pieces. But is it a masterpiece? No, and nobody thought that at the time. The film just hit cultural lottery of both being set on ship and connecting with post-covid men who start to romanticize the open sea when they don't want to think about politics, and featuring a 'straight men love story' (see Shawshank).

Also it helped that Russel Crowe made an absolute ass of himself arguing with someone who didn't like the film on twitter.

Which inevitably triggered lionized the armchair internet film community to have a discussion about how modern audiences just don't 'get it'. Because as we all know the movies we grew up with are the true touchstones of cinema, and anyone who doesn't get that doesn't get films!

But go ahead, tell me why this decent book adaptation belongs in conversation with the godfather.

He looked awesome and you look terrible.

Great film! Russell Crowe, Paul Bettany and other supporting actors. Great rewatch ability for me anyway. I don’t know what being a dad has to do with anything here. Crowe is correct, this generation doesn’t have any focus.

I bought the DVD and watched it a dozen times (upon release) I love it!

That said, there are very few (serious) open-sea/buccaneer films with big budget so the selection is low.

P.O.T.C franchise was annoying to me, because I seek good stories.

I did quite enjoy In the Heart of the Sea (2015).

I used to get drunk like a sailor and put it on. I would crank the 7.1 surround sound and sub. Sometimes I would just listen and close my terrible vision.

It was the closet any movie has made me feel at sea.

It's a great film. @lsa also enjoyed it since he's a big Paul Bettany fan.

The battle scenes were pretty good. I've read a bunch of books about sea battles of that age. Good news is that in the navy vs Army was that it was rare to stumble onto each other one on one. But when you did it was brutal.

WTF? This film had a ton of praise heaped on it when it came out.

Nominated for best picture
Roger Ebert gave it 4/4 stars
It was London Film Critics Film of the Year

I remember seeing that with a buddy and his mom in theaters when it came out. The most exciting thing about it was the poster (or ad? I don't even remember) for AvP. I don't remember anything else about it, my mind became a void for two hours or whatever the runtime is

I can pull a bunch of films with some of those accolades and more that doesn't get meat-ridden on the internet like this film.
