Doug Liman to Direct Post-Apocalyptic YA Thriller CHAOS WALKING

Doug-Liman-Director-061016-Dragonlord.jpg

Doug Liman (Edge of Tomorrow) is in talks to direct Lionsgate/Summit's post-apocalyptic YA thriller Chaos Walking. Robert Zemeckis had previously been attached to the film, which is based on the first book in Patrick Ness’ bestselling young-adult trilogy.

The story takes place in a world where there are no women and all living creatures can hear one another's thoughts in a stream of images, words and sounds called Noise.

Lionsgate picked up the property in 2011 as a way of extending its dominance in the YA film space thanks to its Hunger Games and Twilight franchises. But the studio has stumbled with some of its subsequent efforts including the Divergent franchise as well as Ender's Game, which never even spawned a sequel.

But Chaos Walking has more pedigree than Divergent or Ender's Game given that Oscar-winning screenwriter Charlie Kaufman (Eternal Sunshine for the Spotless Mind) adapted the book. Jamie Linden (Money Monster) penned a draft.

Jon M. Chu is stepping up to direct the film adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda's In the Heights for The Weinstein Co. The G.I. Joe: Retaliation and Now You See Me 2 helmer is in talks to tackle the bodega-set project, which is based on the Tony Award-winning musical that put Miranda on the map before he became a household name with Hamilton.

TWC is moving fast to get the film off the ground after recently setting it up at the company. Miranda, who is producing, has met with Chu recently to discuss the adaptation that is set in the Washington Heights neighborhood of Manhattan and centers on a bodega owner who has mixed feelings about closing his store and retiring to the Dominican Republic after inheriting his grandmother's fortune. Miranda, who starred in the stage version in his twenties, hasn't decided yet whether he will lead the cast of the film or opt for a younger actor.

Chu is no stranger to the dance film genre, having launched his feature helming career with Step Up 2: The Streets and following that up with Step Up 3D and the concert movie Justin Bieber: Never Say Never.

Angelina Jolie in Talks to Join MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS

Angelina-Jolie-Couch-091914-Dragonlord.jpg

Angelina Jolie is in talks to star in Kenneth Branagh’s mystery ensemble Murder on the Orient Express, THR has confirmed. If a deal is closed, Jolie would play Mrs. Harriet Hubbard, a role once played by Lauren Bacall in the oft-made adaptation.

The Fox film based on Agatha Christie’s classic mystery has been in the works for years (the deal to secure the rights with the Christie estate was seven years in the making). Shooting is expected to begin in November in London and then move to Malta.

The story centers on special detective Hercule Poirot, who boards a train from Jerusalem to Europe only to have a murder committed in the car next to his during a snowstorm. Poirot tries to discover the murderer or murderers before there's another victim.

Michael Green (Green Lantern) wrote the latest screenplay. Branagh is producing alongside Ridley Scott, Simon Kinberg and Mark Gordon. Aditya Sood and Michael Schaefer are executive producing. Fox has dated the film for Nov. 22, 2017.

Keith-Stanfield-Death-Note-Dragonlord.jpg

Keith Stanfield will co-star with Nat Wolff in Adam Wingard’s adaptation of Death Note for Netflix. Netflix recently acquired the project, after Warner Bros.’ rights expired, and plans to start shooting this summer.

Margaret Qualley is also on board to star in the film with Wingard writing and directing. TheWrap first reported that Netflix was eyeing Stanfield for a role and sources now reveal that the actor has closed a deal to join the movie.

Based on the Japanese Manga series, Wolff plays a student who discovers a supernatural notebook that allows him to kill anyone simply by writing the victim’s name. A cat-and-mouse game ensues when he’s tracked by a reclusive police officer.

Jeremy Slater (Fantastic Four) wrote the most recent draft of the script. Shane Black was previously attached to direct.

Stanfield had a breakout performance opposite Brie Larson in Short Term 12 and most recently delivered a scene-stealing performance as Snoop Dogg in Straight Outta Compton. He can be seen next in Oliver Stone’s Snowden.

First MOANA Trailer Reveals Disney’s Sea-Set Animated Adventure

Moana-Disney-061216-Dragonlord.jpg

The first teaser trailer for Disney’s animated adventure film Moana has just been released and it promises a beautifully animated, musical, magical journey. We don’t see too much from Moana (Auli’i Cravalho) but the fact that she’s not too impressed by the demi-god Maui (Dwayne Johnson) tells us quite a bit.

Johnson’s animated version of himself is spot-on, right down to the raised eye-brow and pec pops. Moana looks like a brightly colored, fun-filled ride based on rarely explored source material, making it sure to be a worthy addition to Disney’s catalog.

Directed by Ron Clements and John Musker, the duo behind The Little Mermaidand Aladdin, the film revolves around Moana, a spirited teenaged girl named who sets sail to prove herself a master sailor and fulfill her ancestors’ unfinished quest, with Maui in tow. Featuring original songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda and the voice talent of Alan Tudyk, Moana opens in theaters on November 23th.

Mel Gibson Planning PASSION OF THE CHRIST Sequel

Passion-Christ-Set-Mel-Gibson-Dragonlord.jpg

Mel Gibson and writer Randall Wallace are working on a sequel to The Passion of the Christ that will tell the story of the resurrection of Jesus, Wallace tells The Hollywood Reporter.

Wallace, nominated for an Oscar for scripting Gibson's 1995 best picture winner Braveheart, on Thursday (reluctantly) confirmed rumors that he has begun to write a script for a story about the resurrection, telling THR that the project is becoming too difficult to keep under wraps.

Wallace, who most recently directed and co-wrote the 2014 faith-based drama Heaven Is for Real, says he and Gibson began to get serious about a sequel to The Passion, the most successful independent film of all time, while making Hacksaw Ridge, which Gibson directed and Wallace co-wrote.

The Passion, Gibson's story of the persecution and crucifixion of Jesus, was released in 2004 by the independent Newmarket Films and earned a whopping $612 million worldwide on a $30 million production budget. Since then, many in Hollywood have presumed a sequel would some day be made, but Gibson has moved on to other projects.

No studio or financial backing has been lined up for the project, which is still in the early script stage. But Wallace indicates there are several financiers interested in investing. "It's too early to talk money," he adds. "This is such a huge and sacred subject."

First Footage of Pixar's Latest Short Film PIPER

2ewzfcn.jpg

Directed by Alan Barillaro and produced by Marc Sondheimer, Piper, the new short from Pixar Animation Studios, tells the story of a hungry sandpiper hatchling who ventures from her nest for the first time to dig for food by the shoreline. The only problem is, the food is buried beneath the sand where scary waves roll up onto the shore. Piper will debut in theaters worldwide with Finding Dory on June 17, 2016.

“Seeing the way these sandpipers react to waves and run, I always felt, ‘Gosh, that’s a film, that’s a character,” Piper short director Alan Barillaro told Entertainment Weekly earlier this year. “It’s always fun to show a world we’re familiar with but from a different perspective. We’ve all been to the beach, but have we ever viewed water from just an inch off the sand? That could be very fearful from a bird’s perspective.”

Trailer for 31 Teases Rob Zombie’s Most Twisted Film Yet

axbpsz.jpg

The first trailer for filmmaker Rob Zombie’s new film 31 has landed online, and filthy horror antics abound. The story takes place on the night before Halloween and revolves around five carnival workers who are taken hostage and forced to play a game of life or death called “31”, during which they have 12 hours to try to survive against an array of madmen.

This film looks like Zombie saw the Purge movies, laughed, and decided to make his own twisted take on a similar premise and push the violence even further. This definitely does not look like a film for the faint of heart, and if you weren’t a Rob Zombie fan before, it doesn’t look like this will change your mind.

The film stars Sheri Moon Zombie, Malcolm McDowell, Meg Foster, Elizabeth Daily, Sandra Rosko, and Richard Brake. 31 opens in theaters on October 21st.

Full Trailer for PETE'S DRAGON Channels Spielberg to Wondrous Results

Petes-Dragon-061416-Dragonlord.jpg

The latest trailer for Pete's Dragon, the (mostly) live-action remake of the classic Disney tale, has arrived, and it is far superior than the teaser trailer we got a few months ago. Director/co-writer David Lowery (Ain’t Them Bodies Saints) looks to have an excellent handle on the tone here, which is at once wondrous, sensitive, and hopeful.

Lowery penned the script alongside Toby Halbrooks, and his collaboration with cinematographer Bojan Bazelli looks to be incredibly fruitful. The entire film was shot in New Zealand, and the visuals captured here are not only jaw-dropping, but incredibly effective. In a world so often filled with ugliness, cynicism, and the absence of hope, the majesty and optimism of Pete’s Dragon on display in this trailer feels like a welcome reprieve.

The film stars Bryce Dallas Howard, Oakes Fegley, Wes Bentley, Karl Urban, Oona Laurence and Robert Redford. Pete’s Dragon will be released by Disney nationwide on August 12th.

MGM Adapting J. Michael Straczynski's RISING STARS

MGM-Rising-Stars-Dragonlord.jpg

MGM has optioned J. Michael Straczynski's Rising Stars for a feature film treatment, Deadline is reporting. Straczynski will reportedly write the script.

One of the most successful comics/Hollywood crossovers, Straczynski is best known for creating Babylon 5 before doing a number of memorable comics runs. He's worked on Superman, Wonder Woman, and a number of creator-owned projects, although probably his best-remembered work was the lengthy run he did on The Amazing Spider-Man, with artists like John Romita, Jr. and J. Scott Campbell.

Straczynski's Rising Stars centers on a small town where 113 people are born with special powers after a meteor strike. The 24-issue series ran from 1999 until 2005, and along the way was popular enough to spawn toys, spinoff series, and more.

The comic explored the notion of how a sudden flood of peope with superhuman abilities would change the world, from politics to popular culture. In that way, thematic lines could be drawn to Watchmen, which is why few were surprised when Straczynski was among the big-name creators drawn to DC's Before Watchmen initiative.

Much of Rising Stars revolved around a murder mystery: when some of the "Specials" start to be murdered, their power is seemingly disbursed to the rest of the group. So who's responsible? Why? And how do you stop a murder suspect who has super powers, and is getting more powerful every day?

COMMUNITY's Donald Glover Joins SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING

Donald-Glover-Spider-Man-Homecoming-Dragonlord.jpg

Donald Glover is in talks to join the cast of Spider-Man: Homecoming. The film is Sony’s reboot of its Spider-Man franchise, which it has partnered with Marvel to produce, and the movie is due to begin production later this month. Details of Glover's character are being kept secret.

Tom Holland is starring as Peter Parker/Spider-Man in a story that takes the character back to his high-school roots. The project has been quietly casting up and the roll call includes Michael Keaton as a villain, Marisa Tomei as Aunt May and Zendaya as the female lead. Also on board are Tony Revolori and Laura Harrie. Robert Downey Jr. will appear as Tony Stark/Iron Man.

Amy Pascal and Marvel’s Kevin Feige are producing the project that has Jon Watts in the director’s chair.

The casting is a closing of a circle of sorts for Glover. When Sony was rebooting Spider-Man for what became 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man, a vocal grassroots fan campaign emerged for him to star in it, with Glover even embracing the movement. The part went to Andrew Garfield, although Glover was able to partly fulfill his dream by voicing mixed-race Spider-Man Miles Morales on Disney XD’s animated series Ultimate Spider-Man.

Glover has proven to be talent across multiple platforms. He is known as a rap artist working under the name Childish Gambino and also was a writer on 30 Rock, joining that show at age 21. The actor also co-starred on the cult comedy Community and appeared in Magic Mike XXL as well as The Martian.
