Over the past week, an assortment of trending stories — from Jeffrey Epstein to the Dayton and El Paso mass shooters, to Miley Cyrus’s separation and Julianne Hough’s declaration that she’s “not straight” — together have laid bare the strictures of an American patriarchy on the edge of a nervous breakdown. As the status quo, heterosexuality is just not working.

As a snapshot of 2019 America, these stories present a startling picture: Men continue to coerce, harass, rape and kill girls and women — and go to extreme lengths to avoid responsibility for their actions. On the other side of the issue, girls and women are challenging heterosexuality, and even absconding from it altogether.

Framed differently, the picture is this: Men need heterosexuality to maintain their societal dominance over women. Women, on the other hand, are increasingly realizing not only that they don’t need heterosexuality, but that it also is often the bedrock of their global oppression.

Patriarchy is at its most potent when oppression doesn’t feel like oppression, or when it is packaged in terms of biology, religion or basic social needs like security comfort, acceptance and success. Heterosexuality offers women all these things as selling points to their consensual subjection.

Historically, women have been conditioned to believe that heterosexuality is natural or innate, just as they have been conditioned to believe that their main purpose is to make babies — and if they fail to do so, they are condemned as not “real,” or as bad, women.

So, what do all the sherbros think? Has heterosexuality run its course? Maybe more sherbros would like to try out homosexuality instead? Who's excited for the future, where heterosexuality is viewed in the same vein as have a life-threatening illness?

Miley Cyrus’s separation has been on all our minds lately.

Somehow this logic doesn't apply though, when homosexuals/transsexuals commit heinous crimes.

Historically-speaking, the examples of homosexual societies, haven't turned out to be too "kind" on the women. Mostly just turns into a sausage-fest with the women being reduced to the level of animals.

@WarDosAnjos has always been right.

Heterosexuality engenders "toxic masculinity", which leads to oppression of all women. We treat women worse here than anywhere else in the world.

Besides, Gender is just a social construct. there is no such thing as "biological genders."

Personally, I identify as gender fluid, and absolutely reject patriarchal pronouns like "he/her she/him."

Well good news for the rest of us. Liberals think heterosexuality isn't working, that means no more reproducing on their end. A win win for the rest of us. We'll get less @Trotsky type people in this world yelling and screaming "Orange Man Bad".

It's just some stupid opinion piece. Nobody cares.

Ugh why are you even searching for this kind of stuff? don't give attention to trashy opinion piece, man.

Can you provide an example of a homosexual society?

Huh? I thought it’s been working since human existed.

Can you provide an example of a homosexual society?

Ancient Greece (particularly in latter eras), upper-class Ottomans in the latter days of the Empire.

Neither civilization would not necessarily stand as a shining example on "women's rights", even next to contemporary societies.

It's an opinion piece by a random someone on a NBC website, it's not NBC's position.

People should make the distinction clear but then where would we get outrage threads from?

I'm not even going to read the article, just going to have a good laugh at the headline.

Pretty sure it's working just fine, judging by the fact that we are all in fact born.

I'm glad someone finally said it. Heterosexuality is just unnatural, guys.
