NRL Players making an impact on the UFC and why there could be more

Oh it's definitely physically demanding, no doubt about that. I just think League requires a better gas tank whilst still maintaining a relatively high amount of muscle mass.

I have only played League, but seen many Union players try their hand at it and they run out of gas very quickly, where as League players going to Union are fine physically but lack the in-depth tactical knowledge of the game and struggle as a result (i.e. Sam Burgess was able to be dominant physically but did not understand the complexities of Union when he went over from League).

I think there are just less places to hide and catch a breath in League as it requires the team without the ball to sprint back 10 meters after every completed tackle and then sprint back up to meet the attacking team after the 'play the ball'. In Union its mostly one out hit ups with just a couple meters between attack and defence and it's a question of out manoeuvring the opposite by thinking several phases ahead. Full backs in Union will also happily trade kicks while in League, once a fullback receives a kick, he carries straight back into the opposition and its on again.

Due to this I think Union players are generally larger than League players, they can carry more muscle and a little more fat because they get more recuperation time and don't require as big of a gas tank, in League, a lot of wingers (especially in the NRL, not so much the English Super League) could play prop forward, the entire team is more or less (discounting the half backs) required to be big and complete 80 minutes.

Union backs can adapt to league and have the fitness but the big difference is the forwards. Scrummaging, rucking and mauling still often favour size and brute strength at the expense of better all round fitness, which is why you get chubby 130kg plus props who are build like more powerlifters. But even in union these guys are actually expected to gas out which why you have an entire replacement front row on the bench. Get them to leave it all out there for 50 to 60 minutes then bring them off. Those guys would struggle to get to half time a high paced league game.

This is true. Also Mark Hunt was a rugby league player.Played for the Otara Scorpians in New Zealands premier comp back in the 90’s.

Should also be said that the pro clubs are established in low economic cities where fighting is a way of life.

Oh nice, that's another to the list. So 4 League players have made a successful transition to MMA. 1 is a Champion, 1 should fight for the belt next, 1 had fought for the belt but lost and another with a couple wins should get a crack.

Opened this thread and found a steaming pile of men <30>

WTF? NO SHIT.

Even video gamers tried MMA. Pornstars, soccer players ... jesus. Even an elite boxer aka fat, cte Toney tried MMA.

MMA is a fallback sport.

"Lol @ hundreds and the fact that guys who have never put pads on still getting signed actually proves their athletic abilities."

No rugby player ever made a practice squad (without conor mcgregor treatment).

"Rugby guys like Jordan Mailata who are 6 foot 7 and 345 lbs manage to get signed to a 53 man roster despite never playing the sport."

Wow.

The only ex rugby players to ever have any fucken success in the NFL are kickers and punters (skill specialty).

"There are numerous guys currently playing rugby who have had pro boxing fights. Granted not high level. But still lean towards combat sports. There will be a few. Just like there's been a few to put the boxing gloves on."

Fucking lol.
Jesee Williams won a superbowl……. As a defensive tackle....

Being an Aussie and a Big NRL and UFC fan I'm loving seeing the NRL boys making such an impact on the UFC. Former Rugby League players that have made an impact on the UFC are Booby Knuckles, Tia T & now Volkanovski.

For those outside of Australia you most likely would have heard of Rugby but Rugby League is a different game / beast which is a lot more suited to be a stepping stone into the UFC.

How and why?

Not to go into to much details about the rules but both Rugby and Rugby league have the shared aim where the attacking team needs to place the ball on the ground in their try lines and the defencing team need to stop them. In Rugby after each tackle (takedown) there's a ruck that develops as per the below image.

The ruck is more of a team effort of control, where you're working with your team to either try and steal the ball or to keep control of the ball. Rugby has 15 players on each team on the field at a time.

Now lets compare this to Rugby League, there's 13 players on the team and there is no ruck allowed after a tackle. So once a player gets tackled they then need to work their way to a quick play the ball which is to roll the ball under their legs, as per the below image.

Now how does this relate to the UFC?

Both games are momentum based, as an attacker you want to get a quick play the ball in both sports to catch the other team moving back / tire them out.

As a defender you want to slow them down. In Rugby since there's more bodies around the ball the control is more of a team effort on a tackle by tackle basis. In Rugby League it's a lot different since for the most part there's 2 people in a tackle, many times just a 1 on 1. If you can get the attacking player on their back then you can slow them down, while they are trying to get up quick you have some seconds to work them over. As an attacker you're trying to get up quick after each tackle / take down.

There is an average of 659 tackles per game (80 minute game) which is just over 8 per minute. To make it in the league for the most part you need to have been playing this game as a kid, training is heavily focused towards this aspect of the game where for the most part this is where the game is won. Since they were children they have been practicing their ability to take down and get up quickly and efficiently, all Rugby League teams now offer jiu jitsu training, which in turn can introduce them to the UFC.

There's different body sized players, so someone the size of Chad Mendez will need to get used to taking down some the size of DC which in turn develops some beats. Granted to make it you need more than just these skills but i feel it's evident that these skills are a great foundation to work from.

Have thought something similar before especially a half back, thinking quickly and reading ahead however also has the pressure of the big men generally trying to run through them. An example would be players like Fifita, the Burgess brothers and others all around the 120kg and fit (264 pounds) running at guys like Reynolds, Lockyer and Johns in the past who were all under 90kg.

BTW 2nd gen Roosters fan!

Come on now NFL players are on the field for 5 minutes a week. Dont go full retard.

Rugby players would transition to MMA better than almost any non martial art

They're like NFL players but with better cardio and not as explosive

Plus you need to be a tough motherfucker to be elite at it
And years of Ped use from a young age behind them

Kyle Noke (is that his name) was also a league player

I tried to get into NFL but it's too much of a sissy sport compared to NRL. It's hard to watch a game where the players are wearing helmets, and covered in padding and there's more stoppage time then actual game time. It's more of a game of chess then contact sport since any contact is cushioned, the fact NFL players get CTE wearing helmets shows how soft they are.

Trolling btw, but they aren't soft but they are softer than NRL players.

i don't know, don't they have more actual fights in Rugby Union though?

I was also just kidding...those are tough fucking sports any way you slice it

Hayne made it into the NFL hardly touching a playbook, if you know anything about Hayne you'll also know he went to NFL past his prime. He's was an average at best player since he returned to the NRL. Hayne also played fullback in the NRL which is one of the smaller positions in a team.

Watch the below and tell me NFL guys are tougher, no padding, no helmets here and once a big hit is made you don't get time off to compose yourself.. play goes on.

i don't know how you can even compare the NFL to rugby. they're apples and oranges.

it's like comparing Usain Bolt to a long distance runner and saying, "yeah Usain Bolt is softer than the long distance runner because he gets tired faster"

the rugby guys aren't as big and aren't going to hit full force the way NFL guys do because they have no pads and they don't get rests.

NFL guys are shit ass at tackling and don't have the gas tanks the rugby players do.

they're both hard sports in my opinion, i don't see how one is any tougher than the other.

this is coming from someone who has cousins that played in the NFL and a brother and cousins who played Rugby Union for Australia.

Great read. I work with a dude that watches Australian football and Rugby... he was showing me highlights...
