Oh it's definitely physically demanding, no doubt about that. I just think League requires a better gas tank whilst still maintaining a relatively high amount of muscle mass.
I have only played League, but seen many Union players try their hand at it and they run out of gas very quickly, where as League players going to Union are fine physically but lack the in-depth tactical knowledge of the game and struggle as a result (i.e. Sam Burgess was able to be dominant physically but did not understand the complexities of Union when he went over from League).
I think there are just less places to hide and catch a breath in League as it requires the team without the ball to sprint back 10 meters after every completed tackle and then sprint back up to meet the attacking team after the 'play the ball'. In Union its mostly one out hit ups with just a couple meters between attack and defence and it's a question of out manoeuvring the opposite by thinking several phases ahead. Full backs in Union will also happily trade kicks while in League, once a fullback receives a kick, he carries straight back into the opposition and its on again.
Due to this I think Union players are generally larger than League players, they can carry more muscle and a little more fat because they get more recuperation time and don't require as big of a gas tank, in League, a lot of wingers (especially in the NRL, not so much the English Super League) could play prop forward, the entire team is more or less (discounting the half backs) required to be big and complete 80 minutes.
Union backs can adapt to league and have the fitness but the big difference is the forwards. Scrummaging, rucking and mauling still often favour size and brute strength at the expense of better all round fitness, which is why you get chubby 130kg plus props who are build like more powerlifters. But even in union these guys are actually expected to gas out which why you have an entire replacement front row on the bench. Get them to leave it all out there for 50 to 60 minutes then bring them off. Those guys would struggle to get to half time a high paced league game.
