I think that it's really just supposed to be "fun"/a freakshow type event hopefully with guys getting knocked out in between. To take it as anything else or real competition would make it incredibly aggravating to watch.

Let me ask you americans something. Over here in Brazil people and sports media always talk about how americans put such a show for their sporting events. It's not just the game, it's the halftime show, fireworks, etc. (Superbowl being the main example).
