Putting in your resignation

In what state is that required? I know I've fired people during the two week period because they were being dicks and I don't recall paying them out for the remainder of the two weeks. Did I break the law?

Some jurisdictions will have statutory minimum notice periods for when an employer terminates an employee without cause. Sometimes those jurisdictions will also have statutory minimum notice periods for an employee to give their employer if they quit. Often, where a jurisdiction has legislated minimums for both, but they’re not the same, where say the notice period for an employer to terminate without cause is say two weeks and the notice period for an employee to quit is one week then if the employee gives notice that they’re quitting and the employer just wants them gone immediately they can do so by paying out the one week owing to the employee instead of the two weeks they would normally have to pay them if the employee had not given their notice first.

What state are you in? Many US states have “at will” employment where neither side has to give the other notice.

I'm going to leave a job that I'm still in the probationary window for, so no notice for them; not normally my style, but I couldn't afford to have them say "just leave" and not get paid for that two weeks. Sorry suckers, it's called show business, not show friendship

I received a job offer and have accepted into the field I went back to school for, now comes the part of putting in my 2 week resignation. To those that have done this, will they walk you to the door that day? I have heard at my company they have done this to a few people, but not everyone, so I am not sure what might happen when I do.

I have never given less than a months notice out of respect. I usually tell the company I am going to the reasons and they agree....

Damn. Seems like many of you've got shitty bosses.

Well, hard for us to say. We don't know your employer. Best person to answer that question is you.

I've never had that happen before. But you got to have a pretty shitty employer for them to release you on the spot.

The employers i've had were nice about it and accomodating. They let me work until I started my new job.

It's common if you're going to a competitor, and fair enough too, better to make a clean break in that case.

jesus, reading you guy's story's just makes me glad i don't work in a traditional workplace and really hope i don't have to again. Too much bullshit. but anyway, depends on the workplace and the culture, the steel mill i worked in would lay people off and duct tape their tool box shut before they left. I don't know, i never gave two week notice, if someone pissed me off, i'd just leave and most of the time they would try to get me back because i work hard but i hate going backwards. thank god for technology, i can make money without having to deal with that shit.

that's right, all kinds of rules. my old mentor had an employee who got into a fight over a woman, they waited for like a week to fire him, which violated some stupid assed law and he got sued for 50 grand. As i've gotten older, i've seen things from the employer perspective more, how many lazy, useless, gossipping, troublemaking fucks they have to deal with to even be in business, it doesn't look fun or worth it.

Don't rely on getting walked that day.

One of my jobs they walked everyone. When I quit they wanted me to work my notice period even though going to a direct competitor.

I had big plans for 4 weeks off.

Do it through e-mail first. Save and print the e-mail to a thumb drive or something.

I know a few guys who put in their 2 weeks, and got "walked out" that day. After getting walked out, they applied to other jobs. When those jobs called for references HR made it seem like these dudes just quit mid way through a shift. Dick move.

Ended up doing just this

Seems like crappy office if that’s what they do. I’ve always worked throughout my notice and worked hard to set the next person up for success.

No. I’ve held a steady job since sixteen so I’ve resigned from several jobs. Give them a two week notice in writing and personally hand it to your supervisor. Every boss I’ve had appreciated the notice and respect and let me finish out the last two weeks. I’ve only walked off of one job and it’s because the owner of the place was a complete dick. He was pissed, but I didn’t care.

In fact, I’ve had past employers give me a good reference.

Edit: Ahhhh looks like I’m late to the party. Oh well.

I've never gave any notice One day I'm just gone

The only times I've seen someone escorted out for quitting is when they were going to work for a direct competitor.

On your leaving letter, just say things like pursuing new opportunities. Do not even say you have only outgrown it. In a way, this letter can only be used against you.

Now, when you give two weeks it depends. Some may keep you for 2 weeks. Some may tell you to leave right away or maybe early. But you should still get paid the two weeks.

"Putting in your resignation"
Is this a euphemism for sex??? Should be

In my profession (Spa) they almost always let you finish out the day and thats it. There scared that if you continue working you'll poach clients to your new job.

I had one Spa that was ruthless with letting people go (didn't even let you finsh the day even though it fucks over the clients that are already booked that day) so I told the owner let me finish the week out since I don't do house calls and the new job is 15 miles away. He agreed and let me stay

If your in good standing then just do the 2 weeks. I've had jobs where i've straight up quit but it didn't matter because I listed my direct supervisor (instead of owner or manager) on my references so the new employer had literally no reason to call the workplace up since they had already spoken to someone from the job

my first true job was at University, it was very casual. One of my fellow coworkers didnt mind picking up my hours, so mine decreased while his increased and eventually I phased out. As I said it was casual, Professors didnt care as long as the work got done.

I became a Security Officer, after 3 years I took the opportunity and transitioned from Security to the place where I was at. I got help from both sides, it was all very cordial I put in my 2 weeks notice

Well after a year I was having serious health issues, it got so bad I quit on the spot, I got my things and left. It was kinda scary for a couple of weeks without a job or money coming in, even though I was nervous I walked in to my old Security company and they welcomed me back with open arms, all due to the 2 weeks notice! Going on 2 years being back now (funny story, its a big company so they didnt even notice I left. I have the benefits like ive been there for 5 years :) )

Two week notice.... Ha. Are you planning on working there again one day?
