I don't know about what happened at the presser but I know for a fact, I see it about everyday, that living violence and/or sexual abuse during childhood almost always fucks with your life.
In fact, to be honest, what I do see is more the other way around : a HUGE proportion of suicidal or chronically depressed people have suffered from that shit in their childhood ; to the point where, if the patient doesn't talk about any past psychotraumas, we almost always wonder if there aren't untold/forgotten things that happened.

What I mean is that I appreciate that Strickland felt that it was an important thing to say, even though he might be blunt regarding other sensitive subjects. We as humans can heal from, and resist to, a shitton of wounds, illnesses, etc. but fucking with a child's brain is a sure way to do some lasting damage.
