Television Shogun

I think they should've gotten someone else to play John though because Cosmo Jarvis isn't "gentlemanly" like Richard Chamberlain was. He acts too much like the barbarian they think he is.

The TV series is loosely based on the adventures of the English navigator William Adams. Comments from both European and Japanese people who had experience with him from that time show a respect for him as a pretty good person.

<lol>bunch o weebs arguing about how a historical Japanese woman should act <lol>

2 things have not been of interest to me when it comes to Japan. One is the cartoon style which I never really liked. At the same time, I have great respect for the artistry itself, as it is so different from the cartoon form that I grew up with, that is, the Disney style.

The second is the Japanese porn. A long time ago when my wife and I spiced up our sex life by watching porn at the same time, Japanese porn clips appeared on the screen. My better half seriously questioned why the Japanese girls screamed and moaned so much, and the fact that the majority of the men had like micro dicks. She was right, Japanese porn is not that arousing.

It was super condensed into a two tape VHS set at some point. That’s probably what you’re seeing. I think I may actually have the complete miniseries pirated in a hard drive at home

This is the full first episode. I know what he was talking about though. Back in the days of VHS they used to sell a two tape set that had a super condensed version of the miniseries edited down so they could fit it on two tapes.

Not sure why it is showing a link to the first episode. On that page they have a link to 4 episodes I believe.

Oh this show is pretty good! I've only seen 1 episode but I was very impressed. The obvious complaint is what the fuck is this white guy doing in the middle of all of it but maybe there's historic precedent so IDK.

I liked the show tho, I thought it was well-made and I'm picky, I don't watch that much TV. This impressed me.

I like the show. It's better than everything else on TV right now, but sadly that's not saying a lot.
It's been a long 20 years or more since I read the book, and don't remember Ishido being this incompetent, Toranaga counting this much on sheer luck, or Mariko and the taiko's widow being featured so prominently (or in such a westerly manner as someone pointed out). Not that I'm opposed to certain changes in storytelling, but only if they improve on the source material, and some of this stuff don't.

Episodes 5 and 6 were by far the weakest. Hope the pace picks up again this week.

I’ve been pleasantly surprised by this series. I am enjoying it. It’s not great. But it’s good.

?

How could you have watched the first episode and not know what the (multiple) Europeans are doing there?

It's at least half the plot ...

He probably fast forwarded to the boobs scene.

I never said any differently, did I?
My post was never a counterargument to yours. It was an observation.
Did I ever try to prove you wrong on anything itt?

Were you stoned watching it? It is basically the whole first episode explaining it. Nonsensical criticism.

If it was a just an observation and not a response, why did you quote me?

This and Tokyo Vice got me hooked. Got some catching up to do on both of these as I just discovered them last week. Never read or watched previous versions of Shogun, so I have no expectations.

because you were the one who talked about Sanada being miscast.

p.s. do you even work out, bra?

Sanada looked shorter than Yoshinobu Yamamoto when he threw the first pitch.
