I'll have to watch it again, but I don't remember being anything other than entertained for the duration of the movie. Even the slower stuff worked because they threw in some fun gags.
On second viewing, with expectations of mind blowing twists gone, I saw the movie more like you did. It was fairly entertaining. After 40 years of star wars, older fans wanted more mature depth, and they (I) wanted some completely next level stuff.. That did not happen. But on rewatch, the beings in the casino were somewhat interesting.. Even though the part was ultimately pointless.
Things that annoyed me the first time while I waited impatiently to have my mind blown, did not annoy me the second time. The FIRST time, they were amplified by the end result of not really having my mind blown. Lose that (unfortunately) unrealistic expectation of being floored by a reveal, and you start to see what the critics saw. The comparisons to Empire and 94% score were the enemies of this film.
