I always carry a tactical flashlight when I work in nightclubs because the first thing I do when approaching a situation is flick the light on and blind the guy then I keep light in his eyes until I know what the deal is. LOL it is pretty funny how fast their hands block their eyes and how many drinks i have seen spilled.

Handcuffing-i dont carry handcuffs but I know how to use them properly alot of guys have no idea and they do things that either hurts the patron or could hurt them. I see alot of guys cuff one hand then fucking have to fumble around for the other cuff which if the guy being handcuffed was dick could be bad very bad if he pulled away and hand a dangling weapon on one hand lol.
I also see alot of guys who dont understand that the double bar no hit the patrons wrist lol.

Pepper spray I dont use it but alot of guys have no idea how to use or have shitty cans that blow their wad in one spray. I do carry Pepper foam as it keep me from getting a taste when I sparay someone if I do.

Gloves-Alot of guys no wear gloves I always do. the risk of puncture wounds, cuts from glass and vomit or blood borne diseases is high in a casino or nighclub so protect yourself. I wear the thing frisking gloves made out of leather and lined with kevlar they have saved me at least a dozen times from glass cuts and vomit and one time froma hypodermic needle stick.
Please add more and I will do the same

great thread, great tips... i'd love to hear more actually. perhaps some stories about tense/tough situations you've faced. also, maybe some practical tips that anyone has to contribute about basic personal safety when going out and about in the world!

What do you think of those plastic zip-ties? I'm talking about the kind that SWAT teams (I believe) use that get tighter but not looser and you have to cut them off.

Also, what sort of tactical flashlight do you use/recommend? For home safety?

You're talking about flexi cuffs. That's what we use in the military, and they are great but a bitch to get off. Not gonna be much of a weapon if they get free and it's still attached to a writs.

For flashlights Surefire is the most known brand. Prices range from aorund $30-$200. The cheapest is the G2 and is about $30. Problem is that it drains the batteries when sitting there if you don't partially unscrew it, so it might not have juice when you need it, or you might not have time to tighten it up and use it.
I have a Streamlight MX3 tactical light that actually attaches to rails on a rifle or handgun. That thing is just as bright or brighter than my G2, but the batteries last forever. I know that whting will turn on when I need it. I got mine free from a friend, but I think it costs about $100.

As far as pepper sray or foam; if you use it, you may get some on you when you contact the person you sprayed. Something to be concious of.

Gloves for searching are a great point. Some people are filthy, so for that alone, they're worth it.

A kevlar vest would be a really smart investment for security/ bouncer. Could save your life.

i would practice using your flashlight as a pocket stick. you need a force multiplier and since your light is always out it is avaialable as opposed to a gun in holster. if you use a gun consider aluminum rounds as they will less likely enter and exit. just be sure you are authorized for the pistol and the rounds.
a bullet resistant vest may be wise, as well as a plate in it.
expandable baton and know how to use it.

i always have an eye out for hand hiders. if i can't see their hands then they could be hiding a weapon like a blade or similar.

on a side note:
if you flashed your light in my face i might accidently throw my cocktail in your eyes. of course i would say it was an accident. and my hands just went up insticntivelly.

good shoes. flat bottoms, that one can run or side step in easilly. as well as practicing in them, including kicks, strikes, etc.

This is *one* of the many flashlights I carry for just this reason.

Nice. I forget about using a flashlight as a striking weapon, since my flashlight is almost always attached to my rifle. Illuminating where I'm going and blinding people is all I need it for.
For a solid piece of metal you can use, a big Maglight is hard to beat. Those things are pretty hefty with a decent reach should you need one.

Another important point is to make sure you know where your backup is at all times. You want someone to help you out if things get bad. Having a plan on how you do things is very important.

Do you use a Surefire tactical light? If so, good call. If not, I'd recommend you spend some cake on one. They're not cheap, but they're small and unobtrusive, and aiming it at someones' face and clicking it on is like detonating a flash/bang device in front of them.

My dad, looking to validate the hype about Surefire light, shined the one he often carries in his pocket in my face; I was blind and disoriented long enough to allow anyone with a good amount of training to take me out.

At the club where my best friend used to bounce and/or work the door, everyone carried 4-cell Maglights on them. In addition to giving them light in a dark recess of the bar or while surveying the parkling lot, it could be instantly deployed as a cudgel to great effect. One of my cousins, who was an MP when he was in the Army, used to hold it up in such a way as to pretty much cradle the butt end on his shoulder when shining the light on whatever he needed to see (drivers' license, registration, drunk suspect standing in front of him). Looks totally passive and non-threatening, but puts it in a perfect position to whack someone on the skull or collarbone is the situation immediately went south and the suspect tried to rusm him.

Great thread !!!

Hehehe the bouncers giving their secret recipes free lol

Anyway bc I sometimes go clubbing and see a lot, I did see something like fingercufs or something when someone was getting caught bc of dealing xtc. Also a lot of you guy describe I seen a lot used by bouncers.

I know nowadays (atleast here in Belgium) you have to be a qualified bouncer to do your job in a nightclub or something, but a lot of bouncers were mostly fighters or atleast some tough hometown guys if you know what I mean.

Anyway I am always interested and to learn more about your techniques used in nightlife :)

good stuff, I am in NYc and am looking to find a bouncer job here in the city

One of my favorite things to do to an asshole drunk is grab their back belt loop/inside of waist band of pants when walkning them out. It is a sneaky move and most drunks dont notice it but if they get get squirrely and try to turn around I give them a slight wedgie by pulling pants up then pushing their head forward lol sometimes them fall over to their knees sometimes their underware band rips or their pants. I know it sounds funny but when you do this is gets them off balance for a second and it makes it easy to control them. Obviously some guys are way to big to do it to as they may power out so judgement is needed.

so what you guys train here for your secutiry or bouncer jobs. Is it more MMA or BJJ thai or something more traditional

I've seen a few simple, yet very effective methods to remove drunk and/or belligerent and/or uncooperative patrons from the premesis.

1) One bouncer confronts the guy, and when he has his attention, another bouncer (the biggest, strongest, weight-liftingest mo-fo in the club) bum-rushes him from behind, bearhugs him in such a way as to pin both arms, lifts him up off his feet, and rushes him out the door and into the parking lot, where he's dropped.

2) There's a come-along hold that involves tucking someones' folded arm under your own, with your own plam over the back his his hand...as if you're trying to fold the arm flat. Squeezing just a little bit inflicts massive pain, and the person can be escorted out in non-dramatic fashion.

3) A buddy of mine I knew in the Marines who used to hang to out at a massive rock-and-roll club in southern Maryland called Hammerjacks' (which I believe has since moved, and now caters to the urban/hip-hop set) told me that the bouncers would walk people out by having one guy walk up behind the target, slide an axe handle or similar pole-like item between his legs paralle to the ground, and a second bouncer would then grab the free end. The bouncers then started walking to the door; if the drunk resisted or attempted to do anything that did not involve him moving closer to the door, the bouncers lifted the pole, causing the fellow to wind up placing his full body weight on his own nutsack, whereupon they tended to become instantly cooperative again.

This is a "Reverse Gooseneck." The pain is inflicted by pushing the hand back against the wrist rather than squeezing a little bit.
