The rise and fall of Ben Askren

Ben's fall was a lot harder than his ability to strike

Anyone not named Maia would have easily kept Askren at bay on the feet and likely KO’d him. You really think Maia cared if he got taken down?

Again people can start off strong against Askren like Lawler did but that’s a gamble, if you don’t get him out in round 1 he’s gonna turn you into a WMMA fighter like he did to Robbie. As a grappler, you have no idea how fatiguing it is to fight off Bens grappling, he puts so much pressure into every little collar tie, arm drag, front headlock, pummel, etc. The guy is a world class grappler for a reason.

Sherdog just doesn’t have the eye to appreciate his craft.

Maia actually attempted multiple TDs from the clinch and tried to fight off a few LATE in rounds when Ben was doing it right. He made the HUGE mistake of getting overconfident and initiating a TD with THREE whole minutes left on the clock in Round 3.

Idk why people are putting Askrens performance down... in the second he literally bucked Damien friggin Maia off of mount and reversed position. He also took side control after slamming him on his head in the second round. Who else has passed Maia’s guard? Multiple times too.

35 never a broken bone, 36 fractured ribs. Consider him lucky to make it that old and be competitive. Real life sucks. Maia is a badass.

You do understand that Sage literally ran away from the UFC when Dana offered him the Maia fight, right?

The only point I was making is that the idea that UFC fighters are overmen compared to other organisations is a fantasy. In fact I never rated Sage as a great fighter. That said he was demolished by Cosmo Alexandre who was himself demolished by Nieky Holzken in a ONEFC kickboxing fight. That goes to show that it all depends on the fighter, there are great fighters in every organisation.

In fact it's often in those other organisations that you find the "got nothing to lose" utter pitbulls, whilst UFC sometimes makes hires based on entertainment value these days.

Somebody has been watching those “The Rise and Fall of _____” videos on YouTube.

No shame in losing to Maia. Stylistically, this was a bad matchup for Ben's wrestling. Maia is world class and it showed.

It’s not just age it’s attitude. Fedor went a similar route. It’s like they became impatient and think they’re somehow past having to be at all cautious. Luke too

Ben was never that good. Bellator let him walk. What does that say about him? He built a career off wrestle fucking asian cans in ONE. He needed to be in the ufc sooner than later so he could test himself against the best. He choose the easier road with the more money, and i cant fault him for that. .

He shouldn't have skipped PED day over the years if he wanted to compete in the big league.
