Social US Women's National Team Just Want To Be Treated Fairly - The Men's Can't Even Qualify For World Cup

In 'Important Step,' U.S. Women's Soccer Team Reaches New Labor Deal

The U.S. women's national soccer team has agreed to terms on a new collective bargaining agreement with U.S. Soccer, concluding a protracted dispute over their union contract.

The deal will "continue to build the women's program in the U.S., grow the game of soccer worldwide, and improve the professional lives of players on and off the field," the federation and the players association announced in a joint statement.

The collective bargaining agreement announced Wednesday runs through 2021, meaning that the union has committed to playing under the contract for the 2019 World Cup in France and the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics.

Neither the union nor U.S. Soccer has released the specific terms of the agreement, though The Associated Press reports the players will get better base pay, bonuses and travel provisions, as well as "some control of certain licensing and marketing rights."

The New York Times places the boost to base pay at 30 percent, which when coupled with match bonuses could double some of the players' incomes, according to the newspaper.

"We believe our continued partnership will ensure a bright future for our sport for years to come," U.S. Soccer President Sunil Gulati said in a statement.

For a while, that partnership appeared in danger of running aground.

As NPR's Bill Chappell reported, the players' previous CBA expired at the end of 2012, though it was extended by a memorandum of understanding while contract negotiations unfolded. But those talks were far from smooth, as players resorted to the courts to open the possibility of going on strike to protest a lack of progress at the negotiating table.

U.S. District Judge Sharon Johnson Coleman ruled against them last year.

The new deal represents a marked improvement in players' financial terms, though the Times reports it falls short of complete pay equity with the men's national team, a sticking point in both these negotiations and a separate complaint filed last year by five star players for the women's team.

The latter wage-discrimination complaint is ongoing.

In the meantime, soccer officials and players alike cast the new CBA as a sign of progress to be celebrated.

"It felt very empowering," national team player Alex Morgan told the AP. "Because there is a whole issue going on in the country as far as equal pay and the fight for the gender pay gap. And I felt really happy with the agreement that we reached and the fact that we can now do what we came for and play soccer."

I don't understand the American soccer system? Do they sue over money they get from their National Team appearances?

Do they get paid in the US just for playing international games?
In Germany, you play those for free. And before the World or Europen Cup you usually make up a deal you get a Bonus if you win or reach the final.
But it's not that much compared to the club salary.

Europeans pay their national teams as well.

English FA has installed a match fee and competition winning bonus system to compensate players in the national team setup. English FA usually pay England players around

  1. £1500 for winning a match qualifier/friendlies
  2. £1000 for a draw
  3. £500 for a defeat.

While for competition likes World Cup and Euro Championship basic match fees goes up plus a certain bonus for every player incase England wins the competition. For example during 2014 FIFA World Cup English FA paid £2,500 for every match a player started the game while rest of the squad pocketed £1,500 for every game regardless of playing in the game or not. Plus there was a hafty bonus (£650,000) for each squad memeber if England were to win the world cup.

German FA also has the similar incentive based structure and every player of Germany national team gets paid a match fee which is not disclosed. While German FA paid €900,000 euros for winning the 2014 FIFA World Cup and they are offering the same amount if Germany were to win the 2016 Euros.

Ah ok that must be knew. Usually the players didn't get anything for those friendly or qualifier.

Playing for the National Team would increase their salary/value anyway.

Sounds a bit like a joke when a player like Ozil or Kroos get like 1000 bucks for a draw.
When they earn 200,000 a week from their club anyway.

But for women I can see how it makes sense.
Specially in the US were the men and women soccer teams both create considerable revenue.
In Europe usually the men create like 99% of it.

lol?

The US women's team was actually in he world cup finals.

No one was watching the world cup for the US men, everyone was watching the world cup for the US women.

Has anyone had the heart to tell them that women's soccer is really shitty?

Those are world numbers so you mean Europe and Asian viewers watched for the US? LOL And still the men's cup drew 4x viewership - which is what t dives ad revenue.

Oh, and let's not forget that the US men avg 10,000 more live attendance per home game. Sure everyone was watching for the women.

Your point?

The men's team doesn't win.

You have to be trolling. Saying the women's soccer team wins and the US men's team does not is like saying Ronda Rousey is a better fighter than Donald Cerrone because she won a championship in the women's division and Donald Cerrone has not won an MMA title competing against men.

In most cases, Men's and Women's sports are two very different worlds.

I really hope they win so I can still not watch and maybe ruin men's soccer

No it's not.

There is legitimate interest in US women's soccer. There is no legitimate interest in US men's soccer.

The United States women's national soccer team is the most winning women's soccer teamon the planet, believe it or not. They should be getting paid more.

But it's hard to justify the comparison to the men's league, not because of sexism but because of money being brought in and overall exposure. As with any business, the men's league is more well known and thus get more in return.

More people watch the men's games than the women's. It's just basic TV economics, which then creates ad revenue which recreates more resources for certain brands.

In a conference call with reporters on Thursday, U.S. Soccer president Sunil Gulati said an average rating for a men's game is a multiple of the equivalent women's game, "not 10 or 20 or 30 or 50 percent higher."

Just how much higher are viewerships for men's games?

A look at comparable types of games on English-language television show that these differences:

+212% 2014 Men's World Cup group stage vs. 2015 Women's World Cup group stage
+87% 2014 men's send-off games vs. 2015 women's send-off games
+70% 2015 men's friendlies vs. women's friendlies

Even when you include the record 25,400,000 viewers who watched the 2015 USA-Japan final on Fox, the U.S. men outdrew the U.S. women by 74 percent for their World Cup games.

What is not included are Spanish-language viewing figures.

I agree that women should be getting paid more ,they are one of, if not the best female futbol team on the planet. But to ask for the same without their own league making as much isn't economical.

Yeah, you're right. I'm sure no one was watching Portugal or Germany.

Everyone was there to see the storied US men's soccer team washout in the first round as usual.

That would be super progressive.

I wonder though, due to the way males oppress women and form a patriarchy and glass ceiling, it is likely that the top leagues would be filled with more men than women, and then women would still be paid less. Far less than they are now.

"Due to the way males oppress women and form a patriarchy and glass ceiling, it is likely that the top leagues would be filled with more men than women."

What a joke.

The teams would be 100% male or virtually 100% male because men are vastly superior soccer players. But that is the way to end discrimination. We don't prorate defensive backs in the NFL so that whites can play. One team, let the best play, no matter who it is. I suspect the synchronized swimming team would be mostly female, and perhaps the equestrian team. I think women dominate baton too.

You have to be trolling. Saying the women's soccer team wins and the US men's team does not is like saying Ronda Rousey is a better fighter than Donald Cerrone because she won a championship in the women's division and Donald Cerrone has not won an MMA title competing against men.

This thread is about salary. I don't know why that schoolyard "who's better, men or women" argument has anything to do with the pay. It's the same shit that plagued the knuckle-draggers in the Heavies when Rousey joined the UFC and brought it mainstream.

With your line of reasoning, are you advocating that Cerrone should be paid the same PPV points as Rousey, or Rousey should be paid the same as Cerrone??

How much the National Team get paid should be on how much butts they put in the seats for the league, how much global publicity their unqualified success garners for the league, and at the end of the day, the revenue/sponsorships/mainstream prestige they brings to the league.

We can all agree on one thing: the women's National Team were severely underpaid for all the great things they have contributed to U.S Soccer, and no fan of the sport should be unhappy that the league is forced to offer them fairer financial terms now, from base salary to travel per diem.

PS: I hope there will be a day when women soccer players no longer have their legs burnt and flayed alive while sliding on artificial grass in international competition ever again. FIFA forcing women to play on fake grass while reserving real grass fields for the men's games is the epitome of sexism in the Beautiful Game.
