Unconfirmed reports that British Paras are in contact(firefight)with Taliban near Kabul's airport. The Paras were sent in to help evacuate British embassy personnel.

It was always going to be a mistake to leave one way or another and it was always going to be a mistake to stay one way or another, the worst sort of Hobson's choice. Good on Biden taking a shot at it at least. No way to know if the result will be worse than the status quo before he withdrew the troops.

It's also true that if Harris gets elected President after Biden, she will have going back in as an option when it comes time for re-election (not that I approve--just saying) so it may also be good political strategy.

Several people have said “we should have never went there to start with”. That is just a bullshit statement by people who were either not alive during 9/11 or too young to remember. It was not a mistake to attack the people who were responsible for attacking us. The mistake was staying to nation build afterwards.

after initially refusing to hand over bin laden, taliban were ready to negotiate, but neocons were not interested in any of that.

I think its good that they don't have these irrational antiabortionist movements that rip countries apart but yeah, a little literacy would probably go a long way over there.

thats why soviets winning would've been good for a country like afghanistan

socialism is good for 3rd world underdeveloped tribal societies with low literacy rates

once certain level is achieved (high literacy rates, nationalism replaces tribalism) socialism becomes counterproductive.

I did a tour in Kandahar in 2011. It was obvious even back then that the Taliban only had to wait it out. You can’t occupy a country forever. Reconstruction efforts were always met with significant setbacks. We trained Afghans to become Air Traffic Controllers, and they would leave the country as soon as they were qualified. Same with firefighters. We invested a lot in training people who didn’t stick around, which ended up prolonging the dependency on foreign troops. I understand people wanting to leave for a better life, but at some point you can’t help people unwilling to help themselves.

Country folded like a wet paper bag. Comical if it wasn’t so sad.

The Taliban now control Afghanistan and America wasted lives, billions of dollars.

*Like*

Plus you have the fact that the government/provincial governors are super corrupt. A rebuild of that country was never going to work. We stayed for too long and the cost was far past too high.

We trained and built them up for 20 years and they just threw up their hands and walked away when it was their time to choose their own path.

If the Afghanis want their country, they'll have to fight for it themselves now.

america is never going back.

The Taliban didn't attack us. Bin Laden did and the Bush administration turned down an offer from the Taliban to give him to us. We could have dealt with 9/11 within a year.

9/11 was used as an excuse by neocon warmongers to invade and try to take over 7 countries.

Strong username to post correlation

Would a other 20 years and a few trillion dollars more have changed anything ?
Yes Taliban would be even stronger as they have gained strength since 2006. Perhaps with MANPADS by then, and totally cancel Close in Air Support. We would have left even more humiliated. This way we saved many troops and dollars

I cannot believe that I am in agreement with you. It is obvious that it applies to lots of posters or that they are blatantly lying.
