What’s preventing UFC/MMA from being the #1 sport in the world?

At times it is just too brutal.

Normal parents will never gather the family around the tv to watch a snuff film like they would a major sport.

I was at my sons wrestling meet the other day and a kid got busted in the nose. Blood literally covered most of his face from scrambling and it smearing.

People collectively went "ewwww". I laughed and probably looked psychotic as a result of doing so. (Was laughing at peoples reaction)

Its only been around for like 20 years.

Its fighting. Combat will never be #1.

All you Euros=Soccer is a retarded low scoring boring game where nobody even hits anyone.

Football is awesome.
Football is a low scoring game too. The score might be 6 but in reality they have only been to the endzone 1 time.

People say soccer is the #1 sport in the world because it’s accessible. Whether you’re rich or poor all you need is a ball. You don’t even need a ball in MMA. So shouldn’t MMA be or have the potential to be the #1 sport in the world? Throughout mankind fighting has been in our DNA. So what’s keeping MMA back from being the biggest sport?

Is it because Dana is holding it back?

Is it because the talent is holding it back?

Is it because grassroots MMA is holding it back?

Or is it because millennials do nothing but stare at their phones, don’t engage in sports, are to blame with everything wrong this generation and therefore holding the sport back?
"Right kids, go outside and beat each other senseless…"

Its an individual sport. Team sports will always rule the roost for a variety of reasons

1) when kids start playing sport team sports are preferred both educationally and for practical reasons

2) Team sports especially stadium sports make more money

3) Fans have more affinities with teams, either because of location, city, state, etc or because they represent a nation. Very few fans will have the same affinity with individuals

and even taking away team sports, MMA would still be behind Tennis, athletics, golf, swimming, motor sports, skiing, and whatever else
I agree with your points, but MMA is already bigger than athletics, skiing and swimming as a spectator sport. Those only exist in the public perception for 15 minutes every 4 years.

Its lacking several MILLION fans to even be considered a major sport. Right now UFC is on ESPN playing second fiddle to college football.

I blame the liberal media for pussyfying the masses.

Ask 10 regular active people to play soccer and you will get some that say sure.
Ask those same 10 people to fight and you will get a resounding, hell nah!

you say this as if it is a bad thing

college football brings in a lot more money and ad revenue than UFC so it should be prioritized. Non Americans dont seem to understand how important college football (and to a lesser extent basketball) is. This should emphasize it:

Pankration was one of the most famous sports in the original olympic games so yes MMA can become that again but it need alot more years to grow we are just in the begnining of reintroducing MMA with many flaws still in the sport that needs to be fixed.
A athlete who won the pankration games would be taken care of by the state for life with good living and would be like a modern day superstar.
Pankration was part of the olympic games for 1400 years and I am pretty sure under that many years of sport evolution there were many better fighters than modern top MMA fighters mostly due to less rules they would have better defence for anything comming their way.

Fighting is not in our dna. If thers a car wreck it will get every onse attention... is car wrecks also in our dna?
Mma is for people who needs extreme stimulation to be entertained... most off mma fans dont even care about tecnique and dont know the rules. Most just want to see avarege fighters put on a bloody fight rather than watch a high level chess match.
Mma is trash and always will be

It's an individual sport and they sort of are different than team sports representing countries and regions. UFC's goal in the USA should be replacing boxing as the combat sport and then try and get boxing's old status. But the sport should compete with tennis and golf and view it's success in those terms not try to compete with team sports, different cause athletes live, get hurt and retire while with team sports you have teams that are close to immortal that fans can come back to.

How can Dana be holding back the sport when he only reigns over one company.
Silly post.
Also my dad is older then MMA so comparing it to sport that have centuries of history is ridiculous

Well the salaries are shit so they need to start off with that

The ufc and their mistreatment of something that should be upheld as a dignified sport

would disagree with skiing

You ever seen the crowds in Norway or Sweden for ski jumping, or slalom, absolutely mental crowds that MMA could only dream of

Most people wouldn’t go behind the barn and pound each other

Cage fighting will never be a mainstream sport
