XCOM 2 discussion ***Now on Consoles***

Great news. Also great news that they are making PC exclusive... Strategy games belong on the PC.

Great news just need a console version. They should also acquire the Alien movie franchise for more strategy expansion.

IGN is doing daily updates for the first week ro so:

http://www.ign.com/articles/2015/06/02/xcom-2-welcoming-our-new-alien-overlords?page=1

Cliffs:
*Xcom is now the invading force as opposed to fighting off intruders. A bit of retconning for the story makes it so the Aliens did take over and now Xcom is a group of guerrilla style rebels

*Instead of an underground facility, you have a mobile base on board the Avenger (shout out to the original games, booya). Details on base strategy to be revealed later

*New classes (Ranger, Specialist, Grenadier, Sharpshooter), it's unclear whether these are all new classes are possible sub classes.

*Much more variety in soldier customization, including unlocks (aesthetics) for veteran soldiers. Gender/nationality can be chosen.

COMBAT
*Since Xcom is now the invading force on mission, so they have the possibility of setting up a surprise attack.

*"Scamper" ability of the aliens being reworked, possibly negated by positioning with the new stealth mechanics.

*Procedurally generated maps and Firaxis is going for maximum replayability. Destructibility of terrain is much greater.

*I have the biggest boner right now

Anyone played enemy within? Shit was tight. Really enjoyed the exosquad style mech suits. And old timey 1920s dressed human enemies. X-com is the best turn based game I've played since Final Fantasy Tactics.

EW was deadly... Very hard on some levels though. Pure tbs bliss...

On Enemy Within, I felt like if you played it on hard it was less about tactics, and more about luck. The friggin aliens just didn't miss. You could be behind 3/4 coverage and they would still nail you.

Not a mode. We would split different soldiers amongst us, decide who got what before we left the base for the mission, then during missions we'd play hot-seat. That means I'd move my guys, stand up, next would sit down and move his guys, etc. Keep in mind this was a long-ass time ago, before online multiplayer was a big deal. 1995 or 1996, I think.

That would work well, with the old X-Com. You could take 30 something guys on mission in the original. It was a bit tedious sometimes, it would have been fun to split up the mission between 4 friends with 6-8 soldiers each

I think Firaxis learned and embraced some the changes(requests) made from the Mod Community.

I love X-Com (~400 hrs) and I installed the Long War Mod from the Nexus website. Holy crap... so good.

Thanks for this update and keep us posted. I haven't Pre-paid for a game in a long, long time... but I will for this one.

Long War Mod? I must look into this.

*reinstalls*

I can guarantee you it's not going to be a PC exclusive. Timed exclusive, maybe.

I would have to agree. But there's supposed to be an interview on Friday or thereabouts regarding why it's only being released on PC.

I don't normally show my PC-master race side but this seems like a safe thread to do so in.

Isn't it funny how often someone will brag about a console exclusive then when you point out PC exclusives they just shrug it off.

I think the console versions sold only a little over 100k while on the pc it sold like 3 million if I remember right.

http://www.ign.com/articles/2015/06/04/xcom-2s-procedurally-generated-maps-ign-first

Update regarding the procedurally generated maps.

*Uses a "Plot and Parcel" system which is too detailed to put in cliffs. Eseentially its like a patchwork quilt where the details are randomized

* "Nearly endless" supply of maps and you'll never play the same one twice.

* In addition to maps, there will also be procedurally generated secondary tasks to accomplish. Could be hacking a console, protecting a device, etc.

“We're really excited about the baseline gameplay. Because it just ramps up that whole procedural factor beyond just geometries in a different place – which is what we wanted to set out to do.”

“I'm super excited about this,” said DeAngelis. “There was an interesting long-term learning lesson. Because again, with the pie-in-the-sky approach, you're like, ‘Let's make it as random as possible so you truly get play forever and totally randomized.’ But there's so much value in what the artists and designers do with crafting, so it's really that nice hybridization of techniques we learned in Enemy Unknown, but then try and give back some of that UFO Defense.”
