F.C.C. Repeals Net Neutrality Rules... Thanks Trump.

but that didn't happen prior to 2015 or whenever net neutrality began so why will it be different? I'm not an expert on any of this but I am typically not in favor of regulation (not a fan of big government or government intervention overall....obviously not in all cases but in many). My internet worked fine (cost, speed, access, etc) pre-net neutrality. All the hyperbole about this makes me skeptical. Maybe it is because I am philosophically libertarian (but pragmatically it doesn't work for everything imo)

I don't mind regulation if it isn't burdensome and is used to preserve a system. In this instance, I think it's going to do that. This are some instances before 2015 of events that happened.

The most significant ones occurred in 2014 which lead to 2015.

Yes but this will obviously spill over into censorship of speech as well. This is what I care about it.

I haven't read up on the implications that could have. Do you have more information on it or links?

Wouldn't you say this could be a double edged sword since ISP's limiting speeds on certain sites could somewhat impede on their speech?

Why do you pricks keep pretending that net neutrality wasn't a response to a growing problem?

I appreciate your explanations and examples. Prior to net neutrality and during it, I streamed tv shows and movies from free sites (can't name them because I don't want to get in trouble). However I also have Netflixs but rarely use it due to finding the same videos elsewhere that work better (my MAC has issues with Netflixs and so to use it I have to switch from Safari to Google Chrome). Until it affects me directly, which I don't think it will (but I maybe wrong) I'm not going to get all worked up about it. It seems like anytime Trump does anything, people claim it's the end of the world. The sun rose and set today and my internet worked fine. I can't figure out what is pure hysteria vs genuine real concerning issues. It's like the little boy (or gender neutral person) who cried wolf (or some other applicable animal).

Why am I a prick (cunt would be better) simply because I expressed my views (didn't claim to be an expert) and asked questions? Sorry to upset you but your emotions are your own. Peace, love, freedom and happiness to all.

edit: serious, I don't think I have ever been rude to anyone on this site. Civility is underrated.

I agree it can be sometimes difficult to find an opinion to land on with this topic and usually, the mindset of the bold usually is a good compass to use in politics to avoid hysteria. I do worry about this though because I think industry is shifting. Cable is dying out which means more and more pressure is going to arrive here with internet as it will be the central gateway for everything. It pretty much is now but when all of cable is moved there, I want to know how this all plays out. I already am big on anti-trust and I think a lot of ISP's already have decent control on the markets they are in. I mentioned to someone earlier 24% of people have 1 option for an ISP provider. That might be it's own topic in itself though.

Lol at blaming this on Trump.
FCC can fuck themselves.
Still has to pass congress.
Trump has stated he’s against net neutrality
He appointed the FCC chairman who pushed this repeal who has vocally advocated against net neutrality for years and years, knowing exactly what he was going to do
And no, this doesn’t have to pass Congress, that’s not how this works at all.

Congress can reverse this decision but if they do nothing then the FCC’s decision stands (unless overturned in court)

This is what Trump wanted. This is what the Republicans in Congress want. Because that’s what Verizon/Comcast/etc want.

A virile, pro-active population is not at the mercy of the markets. They can simply boycott and protest against providers that do not offer them a platform similar to what they have come to expect.

Being seen as a "scammer" that takes advantage of customers due to advantageous legislation, is a killing blow in the era of social media. Most companies go to great lengths in order to avoid this sort of a reputation.
How are you going to boycott your only way to access the internet?

I don't think you seem to understand me. Exactly what side am I'm defending? Hint ; None.

Nice tuck of anything I had to say besides you getting triggered about, "oh fuck, democrats, collusion, can't have that on my narrow-minded tribalism plate"

Were you fuking dropped as a kid?! @Rebound59
That's a big reaction for someone calling someone else triggered. Stop whining and read the thread and then read your post again. Meanwhile, have a nice time with your new internet plan.

Where did you read this?
Congress can and will overturn this. If they don't, then I guess we know where they stand.

Not with the people, but with the money. What are we going to do about it?

Trump has openly opposed net neutrality. Congress could use a Congressional Review Act motion to overturn the FCC’s act but all indictions are that the Republicans are entirely in favor of the FCC’s decision (whereas on this issue the Dems seem to have the right idea). Two Republicans have come out against it, and like 40 Dems. Not even kidding man.

As far as what are we going to do? I guess hope that the lawsuits succeed.

I'm lost on this one. Is this bad or good?

That's why. Because the internet is working just fine. It isn't broke, and doubt that something only lobbyists were demanding will fix it.

Not sure what you’re asking exactly, could you specify?

Just throwing stuff out there in case it answers what yu’re asking - Trump was opposed to net neutrality and wanted ISPs to be able to do whatever they wanted on their networks
He appointed a FCC commissioner who has said for years that he wanted to remove all rules preventing ISPs from fucking around with the internet
The FCC commissioner did exactly what he said he wanted to do, joined by the other 2 republican commissioners and opposed by the 2 Dems

~83% of americans opposed the FCC’s decision and Trump’s position and it didn’t matter because they don’t care about what people want, just what big corporations want

This is something that matters. A really good test. If this goes through, then be mad and I'll be mad with you.

Government shouldn't control the Internet. If this happens, we know that our voice means nothing and it's a lost cause.

Can the President veto this one?

The President can’t veto this decision (and he’s indicated that he wouldn’t even want to, since he fully supports them in this). Congress can reverse it through a majority resolution (but Trump has indicated he’d probably veto it, making them do a 2/3 resolution which will never happen) or the courts can overturn it by finding that the rule change was made capriciously and without regard for the facts on the ground. The second option is the only reasonable possibility.

So this could be the one.
The one mistake they make that makes America stand up and fight again instead of being a bunch of pussies.

In the tech arena Net Neutrality has been a big deal since way before Trump.
The threat of losing net neutrality is also less about Trump than the problem of massive vertical integration of ISPs and content makers that you have in the US, with the likes of Comcast, Verizon and AT&T, as well as other media giants such as Disney (especially with their new acquisitions).
Combine this with network convergence (cable TV and voice communications are simply going to be another part of "the internet"), and the threat of fully commercialised internet which bears little resemblance to the open platform we have now, is something which the incremental changes and issues we've already seen are foreboding.

Lol yeah, big mistake to screw with peoples’ internet. I do think this will be an important issue in the midterms. It’s going to push a lot of politicians to the right side of the debate.

Your post just comes across as someone with confirmation bias.

And net neutrality has been a topic of discussion and concern way before trump came along. People spoke of how important and necessary it was before trump. So, don't kid yourself that people are kicking up a fuss because it's trump behind it. People are genuinely concerned because of the potential ramifications of losing NN.

Thanks for trying to explain it. I just opened this thread because of all the hysteria in some media outlets and by "celebrities" and wanted to see what the fuss was about (the world is ending, the apocalypse is here, the internet will be broken forever, etc). I just know the internet was fine before net neutrality and didn't see why it would change from how it was prior to net neutrality. I can see some points people are making about potential downfalls but I'm going to take a wait and see approach. I did find the MSNBC interview with the former FCC (?) guy funny.....the one where the former FCC guy tried to explain there were already laws against monopoles and stuff like that.
Thanks again
