Roger GOAT, but I think Rafa Mendes would beat him

Rafa has no chance, you'd need someone unconventional with weird angles and a new sort of movement. Hang on, what's that? I hear Conor McGregor is coming to BJJ! Roger has never seen this type of movement before! This isn't a grappling match, it's a fight! Conor is jiu-jitsu!

Does Roger prove that 'old school BJJ' is still as effective as 'modern BJJ'?

This is true in part because each lb is a smaller percentage of the total weight as you go up. So if Roger was 215 and Buchecha was 240, then the diff is 10% (roughly) of Buchecha's weight and 12% (roughly) of Roger's, and that's still significant. Put it another way, if we shrink each man by...

Does Roger prove that 'old school BJJ' is still as effective as 'modern BJJ'?

I think it definitively proves that it *can be* as effective. Old school BJJ can work today at the highest level, there's no doubt. Whether it is as effective depends on the specific practitioners.

how much does a school/coaches style impact a students growth/performance

Coaches and teammates don't matter. Just find a good online program (or order a DVD if you want to train "old-school"). A decent program will send you colored belts as you train--the color of the belts indicate how much cash you sent in, with the black belt indicating that the instructor is...

Gordon Ryan subbed by Felipe Pena

That's a good way of putting it. The issue I have is that being bottom in side control may not be very bad in a sub-only format, but it sure sucks if strikes are allowed. So while I like sub-only tournaments and certainly applaud the DDS for moving the leg-lock game forward, I think we have to...

Gordon Ryan subbed by Felipe Pena

Of course, it's entirely possible to be both a "pro wrestling-style heel" and a real-life douchebag. In fact, they kinda feed off each-other.

Grappling Needs to start involving Guns

Grappling needs to involve multiple armed body guards. Otherwise it is ineffective garbage.

    Keeping it playful

Even more so for more complex movements like boxing or grappling. Look at the way Floyd Mayweather trains--yes he does very hard sparring, but he also spends hours doing low intensity work on the heavy bag and doing that quick and light version of mittwork he does with Roger.

    Keeping it playful

Yup. In terms of programming the nervous system, a high number of submaximal intensity reps are the pretty much the best thing there is.

Gracie Combatives/Helio Gracie Self Defense is just plain old Marketing Scam to get Clients

I feel like there are actual "self defense" scams that are waaaaaaaay worse than combatives. Some of the TKD and "karate" schools near me have people who train for years and wouldn't be able to defend themselves at all in a scrap. The Gracie Academy marketing is obnoxious though.

    Roger Gracie Passes & Sweeps

Hello all. I'm trying to compile a list of Roger Gracie's go to passes and go to sweeps. I know it's all super basic stuff, but I've never found a list of detailing which sweeps/passes he prefers.

Are ground fighting skills ever applicable in a real fight?

You are right. No recent UFC fights have ever been won using grappling. They don't even learn it anymore. It's useless!

Are ground fighting skills ever applicable in a real fight?

Wait a second...you are talking about how helpless you were being mounted and how you can't tap in real life, and your solution is something OTHER THAN prioritizing grappling?!?

Ryron Gracie vs. Rafael Lovato Jr.

Who is who--I can't tell in the video? And why does it look like one of them is a brown belt? (This was, what, in 2002?)

Should I promote myself to Blue Belt?

Plus, I'm afraid he went ahead and "blue" himself years ago.

    Tobias Funke says yes.

Do basic moves work on Black belts

Didn't Roger Gracie switch to berimbolo, 50/50 and inverted DLR once he finally hit black belt?
