I rarely watch television news, but I caught a news segment covering that story that morning, and I couldn't help from rolling my eyes. I knew it wouldn't be long before a thread popped up about it, here.


When even Pence is trying to reason with the newscaster, "The President was clearly talking about the impact of imports devastating the American automotive industry," and she responds, "Was that clear?" Holy shit, lady. Yes. Yes, it was the most clear and lucid version of Trump we've ever gotten. He was not threatening violence.

Do you see stuff like this, and still genuinely wonder why even diehard NeverTrumpers like myself become jaded to the disingenuous attempts to portray Trump as Hitler? How many times do you party liners have to play this card before you realize nobody is at your table?

there's gotta be something in his own best interest that's making him kiss the ring after all of this. maybe he's just putting this out there defending trump on record because he's worried that trump might win the election, weaponize the DOJ and then go after him on whatever.

i have no idea, but if some dude throws me under the bus and drives a sword through my back there ain't no way i'm gonna start kissing their ass in public years later. not unless i have some kind of solid reason to that affects my own well-being.

there's gotta be some kind of motive behind this. i just cant put my finger on what. maybe youre right and he's just saying shit that a group of his donors or whatever want to hear.

He named regulation as a threat to democracy, showing he either doesnt know what democracy means or he thinks the people he is speaking to dont. Hes not that stupid that he doesnt, so he is propagandizing. That language usually comes from the donor class who want their tax cuts above all else. And it's very simple for them, the Biden Adminstration want to tax them more, the fascist promises to tax them less. A tale as old as time.

No, that references a common belief on the right, especially the pre-populist right. The idea is that unrestrained democracy means that the public will naturally vote to appropriate the holdings of the rich and then collapse. The belief is that the Constitution prevents that and thus preserves democracy. Any regs or redistributive policy in that view is an attack on democracy as egregious as Trump's explicit attempt to end it.

The belief can be attacked on a variety of levels, but I have no doubt it is sincere (self-serving for him, of course, though). A secondary belief of a lot of believers there is that they can't be honest about their views because it's not an election winner, which is why you get both absurd claims about regressive policy actually being the way to help the middle class and poor thrive, and the constant attempt to redirect to culture-war fights that have no relevance to electoral politics.
