Opinion Climate denial has shifted to Climate doomerism

Maybe if we pack a bunch of ice in the submarine volcanoes we'll get a temperature suitable for the climate change worry warts.

My cognitive abilities are just fine. Common sense wins out on common sense issues.

I'm sure 30 years ago there were two guys just like us having the exact same discussion somewhere where one guy was thinking that we were on the cusp of a great disaster and famine while the other guy was saying that everything seems like it's just fine.

Fast forward 30 years and we're still all okay.

You think there haven't been large-scale, Historic climate disasters in the last 30 years. Lol We are ALL still okay.

Oh the climate is to blame for wildfires now.

Caring about the climate changing is irrational. Just turn the news feed off of whatever gay corporate media you follow, problem solved!

Once again you're right back to tbe partisan hackery, confirming my point that this is all it can be about in your brain. All Mayorkas said was that climate change is a contributing factor to GLOBAL migration, which is correct. I even linked evidence of a HUGE problem facing the largest City south of the border right this second. He also listed poverty and oppression, also correct. But that sent you into a tizzy for some reason and, predictably, all you wanna do is play "my side > your side."

Yes people some people are moving because of climate issues, sorry about your feelings.
People where I live are doing that (PNW). It barely ever rains in the summer anymore and we've been getting wildfire smoke every summer for the last 8 or 9 years, it was never a thing before. In fact my town and several towns near me caught on fire and my friend's house almost burned down. They would've already moved if they could've and I know others who have moved because of the fires.

Most people take regulation for granted when they live in societies where the main commercial focus is always comfort, convenience, and aesthetic, however this is paired with large-scale commercialism. This became a subject of interest to me when I discovered Strong Towns, because that movement is also big on sustainability. Adjacent to Strong Towns is Climate Town, a very good channel that demonstrates the hand of corporatism turning all this:

Great channel.

Editor's note (11/22/2023): Over the years, we have heard from readers who tell us that they have seen this article being cited by people who deny the reality or seriousness of human-caused global warming. To make it harder for anyone to mischaracterize this article, we are adding this note:

  • The fact that Earth has been hotter in the past than it is today doesn't prove that recent global warming is natural.
    • Forest fires can have both natural and human causes. So can climate change. It is partly through figuring out what caused the periods like the ones described in this article that we came to understand that carbon dioxide sets the thermostat of Earth's climate.
  • The fact that Earth has been hotter in the past than it is today doesn't prove that current warming is harmless, either to people or other life on Earth.
    • Some previous hot periods led to global mass extinctions.
    • The hot house periods described in this article occurred millions and millions of years before humans existed. They have no bearing on whether modern human civilization can cope with the level of warming we are likely to face if we do not stop adding greenhouse gases to the atmosphere.

I don't see why they can't just buy new EVs, replace their heating with electric and get rid of their old gas appliances. Your grandma gave up Aqua net to save the world once, you can't come up with 100K to save it once more?

True. It's not like the massive increase in electricity needed will require a massive increase in emissions from coal and gas powerplants.

Haven't read the entire thread, sorry.
But I found this pretty interesting if true.
EV's are not all they're touted to be apparently.
Yeah anyone who has any experience in the waste industry knows that a lot of things that were designed in order to preserve the environment are more harmful than the utilities they were meant to replace.

Over 10,000 tons of PV panel waste gets dumped on the shores of Africa every year. I think 10,000 was in 2019 and it goes up every year. The shit that comes out of those things is Fallout 3 tier stuff.

I work in the waste industry and I've gotten a front row seat to how wasteful humans are, and how dangerous that wasteful thinking is. Over the past 15 years I've become very sensitive to that kind of thing, and have reformed my lifestyle considerably. It really bothers me because I go to such painful measures to reduce my own waste and water consumption, and I know that for every person like me, there's got to be at least 1,000 who absolutely don't give a shit. When I see someone being completely thoughtless about consumption, litter, etc and then start multiplying that by like 300 million it makes my heart race. So when people see what I say in the above, a lot of them will think I'm "on the right" and that I don't care about the planet or the environment, but they're wrong.

The problem is the presented solutions are fucking awful. The only thing they do is make the individual person feel better about themselves. If one of your panels cracks, you can't fix it. You have to replace the whole damn unit. Guess where that cracked unit goes, gracious green do-gooder?

And to pre-empt any of the mouth breathers who are going to quote me and distort what I'm saying, I'm not saying that the current model works either. Only that the proposed one is worse.

Excellent post. Thanks for your insight.

I appreciate it. There are so many occasions where I think the true answer is either "somewhere in the middle of this" or "Neither of these." This is largely why I have difficulty siding with either corner in the American political arena. That's why someone like AOC (Aside from the fact that I have the hots for her) is a bit of a quandary because what she wants is noble--- environmental solutions that help the planet. But she doesn't know the path to get to that. And I'm not saying I do, but even with the limited experience I have it's painfully obvious that the answers they're supplying won't work.

Another thing that is going to land on us is the fact that many PVP devices are going to expire around the same time. Average life span of a photovoltaic panel is between 15-25 years. I don't know enough about EV batteries to talk about it but I'd imagine later on we'll be facing a similar problem if EV sales go up.

Until you Climate Change folks get China and India on board and you fully embrace and advocate for nuclear power you're just making noise.

What about rednecks that live in United States of America? I've actually spoken to a considerable amount of folks that call themselves rednecks.

According to these rednecks, the military of United States of America will erase 99.9% of China (the entire nation) in the next 8 years.

According to these rednecks, the military of United States of America will erase 99.9% of North Korea (the entire nation) in the next 8 years.
