Ahh, gotcha. For some reason I always thought Rare was its own thing, although Nintendo's control makes more sense when I think about Donkey Kong 64!

When I rank games I don't cut them slack for the era they were released in or the technology available to them, I rate them on the basis of what their quality is right now. Some games stand up to the test of time amazingly well like Tie Fighter, other games were groundbreaking when released but today I just cannot stand like the first Dues Ex game.
With that in mind no way is the first Mario game the best Nintendo game of all time. If I wanted to settle in for some fun gaming it wouldn't be there for anything other than nostalgia, I can still have immense fun playing Mario 3, Super Mario World, but Mario 1 just doesn't stand up to the test of time IMO.
