Lawler is a tough fight for Askren

Talk about a brutal debut. I realize Lawler hasn't fought in a while, but he's known for having exceptional takedown defense.
You'd think the UFC would give him an easy fight against a striker, but then again the UFC and Askren don't exactly have the best history.

Who wins and how?
as a promotion, UFC sucks big time.
But at the end of the day, I like this baptism by fire.

It will show if it was a good thing to bring Askren or not.

Agreed.

If Askren can't get passed Robbie, then it shows he is not quite elite as previously though, he beats Robbie, and it brings his name into contention. Robbie may not be what he once was, but it's a good name for his debut and to show where exactly he is in the rankings.

Well, to be fair he’s a tough fight for anyone. He seems to be kinda shot recently though.

well... could be that Dana hates Askren and wanted to see him get bit :D

I think it can be a little bit of both :)

fight could go either way
hope Hobbie can pull it off

Lawler is getting old in a division where that doesn't often work out well. Since he's had to tone down the juice, he doesn't look the same. I think Ben takes him down, controls him, and wears him out. UD for Askren. Lawler should probably follow Vitor to Japan, where he will be able to get back on "the program" in the way he needs.

While Lawler has good takedown defense, he doesn't have a very good resume against guys who rely mostly on their ground game. Neither Koscheck nor Hendricks could take him down, but Koscheck wasn't taking anybody down at that point of his career (he was well over the hill) and Hendricks was happy to exchange with Lawler when they fought.

I'm not a huge fan of this matchup. Those tuning in to watch Lawler will be greatly disappointed to see him pinned against the cage and taken down a few times until the final bell, and those tuning in to watch Askren's debut do not get to see him fight a particularly skilled grappler.

Why not match Askren with Covington and see who the better wrestler is? Or with Maia and have a good grappling match between two specialists on the ground - in different disciplines?

You guys sleeping on askren.. Lawlor is gonna take a real bad grapple fuck loss..

Its a great move for the UFC. Lawler didnt look great against RDA so this will be a good test to see how much he has left without a huge chance of more head trauma. Askren has an undefeated record and some hype but has not been tested on the big stage. If he beats Lawler convincingly it will give him some push with casuals. Also this way the UFC doesnt tie up the rankings too much on an unproven Askren just yet. Win Win Win imo.

Lawler 2.0 that came and wreck Kos and and ended up winning the belt and having a bloodbath with Rory should KTFO Ben with ease.

Since that Twood loss, Robbie really hasnt been the same. Looked sluggish vs Cowboy and the old Lawler would’ve been better vs RDA (or maybe that was RDA at his best?)

I think most people don’t appreciate that Askren is probably the best wrestler to ever compete in MMA. That’s not hyperbole. I understand he didn’t medal in the Olympics...what people who bring that up don’t grasp is that he wrestled a different style/rule set his entire life and then crossed over and still made the Olympic team...it’d be like if a Karate champion qualified for the Olympics in Tae Kwon Do and lost but people were like “He’s not a very good kicker.”

Well considering this is his first top ten opponent, we've never gotten to see just how well his wrestling will fare against the top of the division. We will soon find out.

Lawler is another one who has looked a shadow of himself since USADA. I think Rory was right about him.

Lawlor had the rematch with Rory under USADA. One of the greatest fights ever and a great performance on top of it. I don't know if he's clean but you can't act like USADA is the only reason he is old and shopworn. He also had the war with Condit under USADA. He looked worse in that fight but also technically moreso than physically

I hope its more than a grapple-fuck

Hendricks took him down 7 times

Stylistically it's an ideal match for Askren, but there is nothing easy about this fight. Robbie has pretty solid TDD, recovery, and still hits like a truck. One misstep and he's going to sleep.
