Social Madam Web 2024 is Regressive, not "Woke"

All over my social media, I keep seeing people complaining about Madam Web being "woke." The online shit storm over its "wokeness" and "badness" has caused the movie to have one of the worst opening weekends in history. It stands to lose money globally, almost no matter how long of a window it is given to collect sales. I think this is a tragedy because it is a decent movie (when compared to other MCU movies).

We all know why the right is calling it "woke." Stars a woman. Has two women of color in the main cast. That's it.

Why isn't it woke? Answers are in the spoilers.

Madam Web's mother tried to take indigenous medicine from its rightful people without asking permission.

The main antagonist and the main hero are both white people.

Nearly all of the people in authority, including many sympathetic characters, are men.

All of the women of color are children or subordinate to a white person.

The Black man gets killed to motivate the white woman.

Most sexualized character is a teenage Black girl.

Violence against women, such as threats made by the antagonist against his right hand woman, go unpunished or noticed by the movie.

Violence solves basically all of the problems. The villain's assertion that he makes the rules because he has powers is basically shown to be correct. It is the theme stated.

The indigenous man looks very white to my eye (the most important thing) AND he's only there to facilitate the heroics of the white western woman.

It feels like an ink blot to me. If you think this movie is woke, you probably think a ham sandwich is woke if it doesn't have mayo. I don't even know what to tell you. It is a bog standard super hero movie that would have fit in with anything made 15 years ago. There isn't a single woke bone in this stupid movie's entire text.

The people who made it were trying to make a woke movie. Just because they're incompetent retards (like all woke people) doesn't change the intent.

I know people will think this is rather woke of me, but I would suggest that people stop using that term altogether. Or at least use it to describe a type of person rather than try to use it to comment on what someone is actually doing.

Like say "This school is wasting money trying to push the trans movement. It is spending this many dollars, and these other things that would be objectively better for children would cost this many dollars." Instead of saying "That school is woke." I know they're woke but let's talk about what they're actually doing that's so bad.

I don't think it can be pinned on misogynists. Men will turn out for Black Widow, Alita Battle Angel, and Arrival. I don't think there was even culture war around "Love and Thunder" even though a woman carried the hammer and it sucked.

It isn't though. Compare it to Loki, End Game, or Quantum anything. MCU has never cared about time travel or non locality making sense. Nor about physics. Go watch Tony Stark take a 100 foot fall in Iron Man 1. It is goofy. Madam Web is perfectly situated in the genre.

It is ok to not like the genre, or grow out of it, but to act like Madam Web is suddenly breaking the rules is disingenuous.

She got raised by some savage and isolated tribe in the Amazon, but somehow becomes a paramedic in New York City with zero explanation how she got there.

Then as an adult, she somehow locates this isolated tribe in the Amazon using just her mother's old outdated photographs in a very short amount of time. The Amazon is massive - roughly the same size as 48 US states.

There's another scene where the protagonists get attacked in a NYC subway. A few hours later, they're in a diner and a patron is shown reading a newspaper with the attack on the front page. How TF does a newspaper publish a story about an attack that just happened like 3 hours ago?

I haven't seen the movie and have no intention of doing so. But from the reviews I've read, the problem isn't so much the film is Woke as that it's shit.

A Madam Web film was a fucking stupid idea from the start. In the comics, she barely qualifies as a supporting character. Her biggest moment in the comics is nearly getting killed by Juggernaut, which kicks off one of Spider-Man's most epic fights, as he spends the best part of two issues trying to figure out a way to stop the Juggernaut(bitch!).

The Spider-Women have more brand recognition, but they still pale in comparison to Peter Parker or Miles Morales. And in any case, from what I hear, they actually appear in costume for a grand total of about one minute. And that's in a dream sequence.
