James Cameron Calls GRAVITY the "Best Space Movie Ever"

James-Cameron-Praises-Gravity-Dragonlord.jpg

When Alfonso Cuaron was first planning his marooned-in-space drama Gravity, the filmmaker imagined an action-drama set in orbit, most of it with just a single character who would be weightless for the entire picture. It would be filmed using his signature long, continuous shots. But there was one big problem: As fellow director David Fincher warned Cuaron and his cinematographer, Emmanuel "Chivo" Lubezki, the technology to make that movie simply didn

Derek Cianfrance to Direct THE LIGHT BETWEEN OCEANS

f1z21s.jpg

Late last year, it was reported that DreamWorks had acquired the rights to M.L. Stedman‘s debut novel The Light Between Oceans with David Heyman (Harry Potter) attached to produce. The story takes place on a remote Australian island following World War II and “follows a lighthouse keeper and his wife who are faced with a moral dilemma when a boat washes ashore with a dead man and an infant. When they decide to raise the child as their own, the consequences are devastating.”

Variety is reporting that Derek Cianfrance, the director behind Blue Valentine and The Place Beyond the Pines, is now attached to helm the adaptation. Cianfrance has shown he excels at this kind of complex, tragic relationship story, and it'll be interesting to see what he’ll do with the material.

THAT’S MY BOY Director Sean Anders to Helm HORRIBLE BOSSES 2

Horrible-Bosses-Arrested-0903-Dragonlord.jpg

After the departure of original director Seth Gordon earlier last month, New Line Cinema has found a replacement to take the helm of the comedy sequel Horrible Bosses 2. Per THR, We’re the Millers co-writer Sean Anders will direct the follow-up, while Anders’ Millers co-writer John Morris has joined the project as an executive producer. The duo recently did a rewrite on the Horrible Bosses 2 script, which was initially penned by Horrible Bosses scribes John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein.

This will not be Anders’ first time behind the camera, as he previously helmed Sex Drive and last year’s That’s My Boy. Anders and Morris are coming off the strong box office success of We’re the Millers, and New Line appears to have sparked to their rewrite work. Jason Bateman, Jason Sudeikis, Charlie Day, and Jamie Foxx are all onboard to reprise their roles from the first film for Horrible Bosses 2, though no timetable is given for when production might finally get underway.

Billy in 4C Returns for The Farrelly's DUMB AND DUMBER TO

Billy-in-4C-Dumb-and-Dumber-Dragonlord.jpg

Dumb and Dumber To is turning into a true reunion as writers-directors Bobby and Peter Farrelly today revealed that Brady Bluhm, the actor who portrayed Billy in 4C in the 1995 original, will reprise his role for the much-anticipated sequel. "It's official!" the brothers posted to Twitter. "Billy in 4C (I just thought he was really quiet) is returning in #DumbTo! Played again by the highly underrated Brady Bluhm."

Billy, fans will remember, was the blind neighbor boy to whom Jeff Daniels and Jim Carrey's Harry and Lloyd sold their headless bird, Petey. Following the release of the original film, actor Bluhm went on to voice Christopher Robin in a series of direct-to-home-video Winnie the Pooh films. He recently starred in a film that he also co-created and edited, The Last Man(s) on Earth.

Jeez kickass' wife is twice his age. Yikes

I think he was 17 when they started dating, knocked her up by 19, and now they are married. The relationship is an odd one, I'm surprised it lasted this long. Surprised there wasn't much of an uproar about it, she was cemented in the film industry and he was a young up and comer, should have made headlines.

Vin Diesel Says He Would Be Homeless If RIDDICK Wasn't Finished

Riddick-Premiere-0830-Dragonlord.jpg

All eyes were on Vin Diesel as he brought the energy to the Los Angeles premiere of Riddick at Westwood's Regency Village Theater on Wednesday. The R-rated film, produced by Diesel, is the third installment of the sci-fi series following Pitch Black (2000) and The Chronicles of Riddick (2004), each written and directed by David Twohy.

The making of Riddick differed from that of its 2004 predecessor, which was both produced and distributed by Universal. Without the funding of a major studio behind Riddick's production, Twohy said the crew reduced their shooting schedule to 47 days of filming (compared to 85 on the last film) in addition to reducing their budget. "We had to learn how to be independent filmmakers again," Twohy told THR.

Since it was his passion project, Diesel was dedicated to making the film happen at all costs. "I had to leverage my house," Diesel said. "If we didn't finish the film, I would be homeless."

The actor and producer was motivated to continue on with the series after a Riddick fan told him, "We want a rated-R movie and we'd be willing to pay $10 each. Surely you'd have enough to make it then." Said Diesel: "Something about that comment made me think, bless their heart, and if I can do anything with this newfound success, if I could do anything at all, I could deliver on that wish."

Vin Diesel Traded TOKYO DRIFT Cameo to Own RIDDICK Rights

Vin-Diesel-Riddick-Set-1-Dragonlord.jpg

Vin Diesel doesn't just play Riddick, the intergalactic ex-con who can see in the dark, he owns the role -- literally. And thanks to some shrewd maneuvers from the muscle-bound star, he has kept the franchise alive.

Diesel, 46, and Riddick writer-director David Twohy have overcome obstacles, but the key move came in 2006, when Universal asked Diesel to make a cameo in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift. Looking to recharge the series, the studio wanted to use his brief return in Tokyo Drift to signal he would be back center stage in a fourth movie. Diesel agreed, but instead of an acting fee, he demanded the studio give him and his One Race production company rights to the Riddick character.

Originally, PolyGram Entertainment wanted Steven Seagal for the Riddick role in 2000's Pitch Black. "It's easy to see Vin now in it, but auditioning is not his gift," recalls Twohy. "He didn't rise to the top of the heap in a clear way, but there was something there."

When 2004's sequel The Chronicles of Riddick, which cost more than $100 million, took in only $116 million worldwide, plans for more movies disappeared. So in 2009, Twohy and Diesel hunkered down in Diesel's kitchen and hammered out a new story. Instead of continuing in the extravagant vein of the second film, they returned to basics, with a lone Riddick marooned on a hostile planet.

With crews arriving in Montreal in 2012, the money ran out when a completion bond fell through. "It was messy, it was bad," says Twohy. "We basically got kicked out of town." Diesel then personally advanced funds until bank loans were secured and the filmmakers could return to Montreal, where they shot for 48 days on a budget in the $35 million to $40 million range.

Mark Wahlberg Wants to Replace Robert Downey as IRON MAN

Mark-Wahlberg-Iron-Man-Dragonlord.jpg

Back in April, Robert Downey Jr. expressed his interest in retiring from the Iron Man role, and it was later confirmed that Iron Man 3 is the actor's last stand-alone Iron Man movie, although the actor will be back as Tony Stark in The Avengers: Age of Ultron and a third installment of The Avengers. While doing press for the international release of his action-thriller 2 Guns, Mark Wahlberg revealed he is interested in taking over the Iron Man franchise from Robert Downey Jr., and divulged that he was previously in talks for another superhero role.

"I would like to take over the Iron Man franchise for Robert Downey Jr., [but] it's one of those things where I kind of like playing real people, [so] I've never been asked. Once I was kind of being talked about for the Robin role in Batman Forever -- somebody dodged a bullet!"

"You know, there's so many effects-driven movies. What people have a tendency to forget, because you look at a lot of the trailers and the summer movies that came out... they all look very similar. It's like you can only do so much with effects. I don't think any person sitting at home watching a television spot, a 15-second spot or a 30 second spot, is gonna say 'Oh I'm gonna go see a movie because I haven't seen that!' You've seen it all before. People haven't been wowed by effects since Jurassic Park or The Perfect Storm with the wave, you know?"

Mark Wahlberg Wants to Replace Robert Downey Jr. as the Next IRON MAN

Update: September 3, 2013

"Wicked Awesome" IRON MAN Film by "Mark Wahlberg"

When Ben Affleck was announced as the new Batman the Internet was pissed. But when Mark Wahlberg announced he wanted to take over Iron Man nobody noticed. So he made this wicked awesome reboot trailer to show how an Iron Man set in Boston would be the best movie ever made. Watch him battle The Mandarin and Obadiah Stane while trying to save Pepper and Fenway Park.

Wow. I hope Vin makes his money back.
I, too, would have paid $10 to see a third Riddick movie. Alas, this looks like the 2nd Riddick movie reheated.

I think CrazyJHL and 3GFish can speak more knowledgeably, but isn't investing your own money bad movie business?

i would think vin has money that he couldve bought another house...

Benedict Cumberbatch to Star in James Gray's THE LOST CITY OF Z

Benedict-Cumberbatch-Image-0904-Dragonlord.jpg

After rumors swirled that Benedict Cumberbatch might reteam with Star Trek Into Darkness director J.J. Abrams in some sort of role in Star Wars: Episode VII, it sounds like the actor is taking a role in another film instead. Deadline has word from the Toronto International Film Festival, where Cumberbatch's turn in The Fifth Estate will bow alongside performances in 12 Years a Slave and August: Osage County, that the actor is currently in talks to lead James Gray's long-gestating adaptation of David Grann's book The Lost City of Z, an epic tale about a British explorer lost in the Amazon searching for the City of Z.

The book (which Gray adapted himself) focuses on British explorer Colonel Percy Fawcett, who went searching for the so-called City of Z in the Amazon, but mysteriously disappeared in 1925. Over the last 80 years, countless explorers have tried and failed to retrace Fawcett's path, including a 1996 expedition of Brazilian adventurers. He is said to have been an inspiration for Indiana Jones and other fictional archaeologists, but no one knows what happened to him. So we're wondering how the script will end.

Jared Harris Reteams with Guy Ritchie for THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E.

Jared-Harris-Man-from-UNCLE-Dragonlord.jpg

The big screen adaptation of The Man from U.N.C.L.E. from director Guy Ritchie will begin production in England in just over a week, and one more cast member has just signed on for the film. Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer are already lined up to lead the film as special agents Napoleon Solo and Illya Kuryakin based on the 1960s TV series about two agents who work for the United Network Command for Law and Enforcement. Now THR reports Ritchie is bringing his Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows villain and former "Mad Men" star Jared Harris into the mix, but it's not specified what character he will be playing.

The Warner Bros. film also features Alicia Vikander in the female lead with Hugh Grant in a supporting role as well. Ritchie co-wrote the film with Lionel Wigram and they're both producing the film as well by way of their first look deal with the studio. Harris should add some weight to the cast which seems a little too untested in drawing a crowd. Sure, Cavill starred in Man of Steel, but Superman was the draw there, and not Cavill himself. Plus, The Lone Ranger bombed, so Armie Hammer isn't exactly at the top of his game. It'll be interesting to see how this flick shakes out.

Mattel, Dolphin Entertainment to Develop Live-Action MAX STEEL

2jflw9c.jpg

Four years ago, Mattel teamed up with Paramount Pictures to develop a live-action feature based on the toy Max Steel. The action figure was developed in tandem with an animated series that run from 200-2002, and then there were nine animated movies from 2004-2012. A reboot currently airs on Disney XD. According to Wikipedia, Max Steel‘s current iteration is about “Maxwell McGrath, and Max Steel is no longer one person, but two; Maxwell and an alien robot named, “‘Steel.’ Maxwell has the ability to generate “Turbo Mode,” however, he cannot contain it and is becoming unstable.” The Paramount partnership eventually fizzled out, and Mattel is now teaming with Dolphin Entertainment to make the movie.

As for the plot, the press release states “the storyline centers on bringing a positive and relatable hero to kids, drawing upon turbo-charged teamwork, laughter and friendship.” Christopher Yost (Thor: The Dark World) will write the script and Stewart Hendler will direct. Open Road Films will distribute Max Steel with en eye towards a fourth quarter 2014 release.
