Not really controversial that the country went downhill under Trump and has recovered since. The controversy would be over how much to blame him for it and how much credit to give Biden for the turnaround. Basically anything you measure for this--unemployment, crime, health outcomes--got way worse from Jan. 2017 to Jan. 2021. We also had a big decline in the W years followed by a lot of improvement during Obama's presidency.

The guy was clearly operating on the assumption that presidents just have levers in their office to raise/lower inflation, gas prices etc. So I had to bring the conversation down to his level.

If we argued on actual policies, which anyone who begins with "woke president" is clearly not very versed on, I would've loved to hear how tax cuts for billionaires and mass deregulation while attempting to gut healthcare was somehow better for the voters than say.. student loan relief, infrastructure bill, inflation reduction act etc.
