Short notice title fight, worth it?

Sounds like an injury

If you watch the Embedded episode 2 that's my first thought upon seeing Tom. He's just moving really stiff in general, and then also stiff during his workouts. Yes he'd just landed, which is what his coach immediately blames it on their long flight. But then tries to correct himself that actually Tom looks great and is hitting harder than ever as if he knows he shouldn't have said that. 8hr flight + 1 hour cab does suck, but he's still looking stiff and upright what's gotta be hours after that as if he's got some kind of posterior or leg injury.

Meanwhile his dad, his other coach, is sitting there babbling to the camera about how this is such a mistake, they need a camp, it's all Tom's idea, and he's young and in it for the long haul so there'll be other shots at the title later. His dad clearly seems to think something's wrong or they just can't win this fight right now as it is.

It's a shame as yeah, I do think Tom at his peak probably is the better fighter.

Adrenaline will cure that sir.

I think you might be right. The interview he did was concerning to me. Going out and winging it vs someone like Pavlovich seems like a recipe for disaster despite Aspinall's immense natural gifts and skill himself.

Tom could still win, but the circumstances leading up to this fight tip me a bit towards Pavlovich taking it.

I've been saying all along that Pav is basically the Terminator. He's a giant nigh unstoppable force who's just going to keep coming at you absorbing whatever you throw at him until he's the last one standing. The only way to beat the Terminators is to be another stronger one yourself and make them crumble first through greater strength or, as in most cases, to outstrategize it and beat it unconventionally instead of head to head.

Tom's hope was always probably the latter scenario as only Ngannou could probably do the first scenario. Overeem did the latter by getting him off his feet so he couldn't get going, but that was also short notice for Pav and years before his current TDD. Tom at his best could probably take him down and do the same or strategically dance around him potshotting him to victory, but short notice I don't think he's prepared for the inevitable bull charge like he needs to be.

Meanwhile Pav just needs to do what he always does and change nothing at all. As the backup for Jones or Stipe he was always going to be prepared for a strong technical striker with great grappling which is Tom too.

Idk what this is, but I noticed that you're from New York and everything made sense. I bet you guys have a ton of fedora neckbeards lol

Yes, New York City, the highest concentration of multimillionaires in entire world....

I don't know where you're from but you do write like a fedora-weight basement dweller.

Can’t turn down an opportunity like this. Having said that it’s a damn shame a fighter has to come in at such short notice for obvious reasons!

Hmm, I don't agree with this beign the worst circumstances possible.

Did he not just see Volk and Usman stepping up a weight class to fight on 10 days notice?

Exactly my first thought.

With Volk, he didn't even have time to really train. He had 10 days to lose 25 pounds and get to Saudi Arabia.

With Tom Aspinall, its a question if he's been training regularly. Without a fight scheduled fighters should treat training like a part-time job. During camp its a full-time job. Unless he's gotten completely out of shape 3 weeks notice shouldn't be a big issue.

Sergei has had a full fight camp, most of it training for Stipe or Jones. That's a very very dangerous opponent for any heavyweight.

That city is an absolute shit hole and the people from there are garbage. You're a fine example of that.

Bring up all of the multimillionaires, when you aren't one. You're pathetic.

Worst circumstances possible?

Saku fought Royce Gracie for AN HOUR AND A HALF in the 2000 GP, causing Gracie to quit on the stool.

He then went ahead THE VERY SAME NIGHT and fought IGOR VOVCHANCHYN for another FIFTEEN MINUTE round before his corner stopped it from going into an OT round...

Worst circumstances, my ass.

is he not referring to how long he’s had to prepare rather than what happens in the fight? Since that’s still in the future and an unknown

I’m not getting this comparison at all unless Saku had 2 weeks to prepare and was told it would be a 1.5 hour fight?

Fighting on less than three weeks’ notice at UFC 295, Tom Aspinall is confident of getting his hands raised against Sergei Pavlovich, whom he believes is “the scariest guy in MMA.”

Pavlovich (18-1) was supposed to be the backup fighter for the originally scheduled UFC 295 main event between Jon Jones and Stipe Miocic. However, Aspinall (13-3) chose to step up on short notice when the Ultimate Fighting Championship put together an interim title fight with Pavlovich after Jones was forced out due to an injury.

Aspinall admits “two weeks” aren’t enough to prepare for a fight and believes he is fighting Pavlovich under the worst possible circumstances. However, the Brit is a slight favorite as of publication time on many sportsbooks and has absolute confidence in his ability to find a way to win despite the deck being stacked against him.

“I’m fighting the scariest guy in MMA in my opinion, in the worst circumstances possible without a training camp,” the 30-year-old said during the UFC 295 media day. “I obviously think I can win. I’m not the kind of guy who shows up for money. I ain’t signing a contract and showing up if I don’t think I can win. I truly, truly believe that I’m going to win on Saturday night. I’m an absolute winner, and I’m going to find a way to win regardless of the circumstances.”

Aspinall has finished all six of his UFC victories so far with his only loss being a freak knee injury against Curtis Blaydes in 2022. Meanwhile, Pavlovich is coming off six straight first-round stoppage wins after suffering his lone pro loss in his UFC debut against Alistair Overeem in 2018.

Many fans and pundits believe the two surging prospects are the rightful contenders for the UFC heavyweight title, which they believe Jones should vacate. However, UFC CEO Dana White has clearly stated that the interim champ has to wait for the winner of Jones’ title defense against Miocic after the champ returns.

he better tuck that chin because he comes out like that vs Pavlovich and he's a damn liability

After seeing Volk get head-clean-off'd by Islam, I have the tendency to agree. As a fan, I hate that this match-up is getting put together short notice. We went from the absolutely unnecessary Jones/Miocic fight to a real HW banger...but without the adequate hype or time for the fighters to prepare. I feel like we're going to get supremely undercut by what should be the ideal HW title fight
